CDC report reveals more than 45,000 Americans took their own lives in 2016

Suicide has become the 10th leading cause of death in the USA, and is one of three leading causes that are on the rise, the CDC said. Twenty-five states saw percentage rate increases of more than 30 percent over the 17 years.

CDC Principal Deputy Director Dr. Anne Schuchat told NBC, "Middle-aged adults had the largest number of suicides and a particularly high increase in suicide rates".

Previous CDC reports have found rate increases of 80 per cent among white, middle aged women since 1999, and of 89 per cent among Native Americans. In the USA, to nobody's surprise, firearms are the most commonly used method, accounting for 41 percent of suicides of people with known mental-health conditions, and 55 percent of those without, according to the CDC report.

Schuchat said the data analyzed revealed a number of factors leading up to death by suicide, including economic woes, relationship issues, substance misuse, physical health problems and others.

The rate of suicide deaths has been rising across the USA since at least 1999, according to new data released Thursday.

Rates varied widely across the country during the study period, from 6.9 per 100,000 residents per year killing themselves in Washington, D.C., to 29.2 per 100,000 residents in Montana - the highest in the country, followed by Alaska and Wyoming. The rate increase in Missouri was 36.4 percent.

Utah, Idaho, South Dakota, Kansas, Oklahoma, Vermont and New Hampshire all saw suicide rate increases between 43 and almost 58 percent. Last year, the CDC released a package on suicide prevention that includes strategies based on the best available evidence.

The report is bad news, the CDC acknowledges, but people are not helpless to prevent suicide.

Although suicide is often attributed exclusively to mental health conditions, it is rarely caused by a single factor, the researchers said. Suicide is now the tenth leading cause of death in the country, and one of only three on the rise, in addition to Alzheimer's and drug overdoses.

'If we step back from the statistics, mental health does not discriminate, ' said Dr Shainna Ali, a Florida psychologist.

"In addition to making sure Missouri's farmers and ranchers have a strong safety net and access to trade, we need to ensure they have access to the mental health resources that are often lacking in rural areas", McCaskill said in a statement.

Guns were the most common method used for suicide, accounting for nearly half of the people who died.

The Associated Press contributed to this story.

If this person talks or behaves in a way that makes you believe that he or she may try to attempt suicide, then get help from a trained professional as quickly as possible.

"If you think of [suicide] as other leading causes of death, like AIDS and cancer, with the public health approach, mortality rates decline", Moutier said.

The report also cites the need to reduce "access to lethal means" but without explicitly discussing firearms or controversial issues such as gun control legislation. Telling someone you care and want to help is always a good idea, and so is letting them do most of the talking about how they're feeling, without judging, shaming, or threatening.

If you or a loved one are struggling, visit, or call the National Suicide Prevention Hotline at 1-800-273-8255. However, teens who aren't likely to reach out could be internalizing what they see.
