Collective gravity, not Planet Nine, may explain the orbits of "detached objects"

Some of these bodies - which are called trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs), notes Space.com - have very peculiar orbits that set them apart from everything else in the solar system.

The theory was presented to the 232nd meeting of the American Astronomical Society in Denver, Colorado.

University of Colorado Boulder Assistant Professor Ann-Marie Madigan and a team of researchers have offered up a new theory for the existence of planetary oddities like Sedna. During a collision with Sidney they push the object in a distant region of the Solar system. This cycle could wind up shooting comets toward the inner solar system-including in the direction of Earth-on a predictable timescale. This could also be why these dwarf planets seem "detached" from the rest of the Solar System, which more or less work as a unit.

The young astronomer suggested the distant dwarf planets zoom around the sun like the hands on a clock - some bodies move faster than others but will eventually overlap.

Researchers at California University Boulder (CU Boulder) presented a new theory about the existence of icy, minor planets almost eight billion miles from the sun.

But instead, undergraduate astrophysics student Jacob Fleisig helped Dr Madigan envision all the different bodies outside the solar system chaotically crashing into one another.

"You see a pileup of the orbits of smaller objects to one side of the sun", said Fleisig, who is the lead author of the new research. "These orbits crash into the bigger body, and what happens is those interactions will change its orbit from an oval shape to a more circular shape".

Could planet 9 be a cluster of asteroids and not one large body? Possible separate object is Sedna, the perihelion of which is two times beyond the orbit of the eighth planet.

The probability of the existence of Planet X discussed by scientists from 2016.

Where Do Dinosaurs Fit Into All Of This?

Remarkably, these relatively insignificant objects may also be culpable in the extinction of the dinosaurs.

Sedna's eccentric orbit has been cited as evidence that another, larger planet's gravity must be nudging it off-kilter somewhere along its path, and the mysterious Planet Nine is usually assumed to be responsible.

If this is true, then Earth makes no exception and could also be subjected to the repeating cycle of cosmic bombarding triggered by the small gravitational interactions in the Kuiper Belt. "While we're not able to say that this pattern killed the dinosaurs, it's tantalizing", says Fleisig.
