Google Honors Doctor Who Created Life-Saving APGAR Test

Google doodle celebrates Dr Virginia Apgar the doctor behind unique newborn score

She developed a newborn infant's neonatal prognosis also known as Apgar Score, which is taken within minutes of birth, and has now become standard practice in hospitals worldwide.

Aside from the Apgar Score, she also accomplished numerous feats throughout her career.

Google doodle today remembers Dr Apgar on what would have been her 109th birthday.

The doctor was given three honorary doctorates during her career rom the Women's Medical College of Pennsylvania, Mount Holyoke College and the New Jersey College of Medicine and Dentistry.

The search engine Google is honoring the life of an American doctor who developed a system for measuring a newborn baby's health.

Dr Apgar developed the now ubiquitous Apgar score in 1952.

Her contributions are even more noteworthy as she did her research and inventions at a time when women were discouraged to pursue higher education in medicine.

The test is conducted in the first five minutes after birth, allowing doctors to determine which babies need immediate care.

The doctor was the first woman to become a professor at the prestigious Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeon in 1949. Score above 7 are normal and 4 to 6 are fairly low.

But she could barely spend two years into her surgery residency as the then Chair of Surgery at the institution persuaded her to switch to anesthesia, an uncalled-for move that Columbia University termed "a reflection of the times".

Dr Virginia Apgar received a degree in public health from John Hopkins University in 1959.

Virginia Apgar was trained as a surgeon who specialised in anaesthesiology. The score, which has a scale of 0-2, helps in gauging the health of a newborn by taking into cognizance the basic functions of the body like heart rate, muscles' tone, respiration patterns, reflex, etc. and provides a result immediately thereafter. In 1995, she was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame, and in 1973, she co-authored the landmark book Is My Baby All Right?

She trained in anesthesia at the University of Wisconsin and Bellevue Hospital in the USA, but returned to Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital in 1938.

Apgar never married, and died of cirrhosis of the liver at the age of 65.

These included fishing, stamp collecting and flying lessons in her fifties.
