Many breast cancer patients can safely skip chemotherapy

In a rare triumph for tough-to-beat pancreatic cancer patients who had surgery lived substantially longer on a four-drug combo than on a standard cancer drug according to research released on Monday

"Women regularly call our helpline struggling with debilitating side effects from long-term breast cancer treatments, like aromatase inhibitors, and joint pain is a particularly common problem".

Most girls with the most Frequent kind of early-stage Breast cancer may safely bypass chemotherapy without damaging their chances of beating the illness, physicians are reporting from a landmark study that used genetic testing to evaluate every individual's risk.

The study, led by the Albert Einstein Cancer Center in NY, is a rare cancer breakthrough as it can save money and instantly change practice.

In a new analysis, researchers examined 9,717 women between the ages of 18 and 75 with early-stage breast cancer that had not spread to lymph nodes. The time until the pancreatic cancer came back after treatment was also extended in those receiving chemoradiotherapy, 9.9 months on average compared to 7.9 months in those having immediate surgery. He said "Oncologists have been waiting for these results, it will affect practice on Monday morning".

Doctors at the University of Texas analysed the progress of 1,307 patients with a range of cancers including breast, gynecologic and gastrointestinal. "It's a great news story".

"This life-changing breakthrough is absolutely wonderful news as it could liberate thousands of women from the agony of chemotherapy". Ray Lin, Scripps Medical Director of Radiation Oncology, to discuss the groundbreaking study. Without the stamp money, the study may never have been done, he said.

Chang said the results were exciting because chemotherapy before surgery has been adopted in other cancer types, such as breast and large bowel, and this study now provides evidence to suggest benefit for pancreatic cancer too.

In the study, women were deemed to have a medium level risk of the cancer recurrence based on a 21-gene panel known as Oncotype DX. Many women think "if I don't get chemotherapy I'm going to die, and if I get chemo I'm going to be cured", but the results show there's a sliding scale of benefit and sometimes none, he said.

The study was extensive so patients who fit in this new category should be very confident with their course of treatment, even if it's without chemotherapy.

Dr. Jennifer Litton at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, agreed, but said, "Risk to one person is not the same thing as risk to another".

"I was somewhat relieved". "The remedies" were not agreeable", she concedes.

"I lost my hair".
