Syphilis cases are on the rise in England

GETTYPublic Health England said regular use of condoms will limit the spread of the disease

Chlamydia accounted for 31 percent (15,284) of all new cases of STI's in men who have sex with men.

Good news everyone, despite living in a world where we can now talk to people on the other side of the world immediately, buy robots and become famous on the internet, the great Victorian sexually transmitted infections are apparently making a comeback.

While diagnoses of STIs in England is overall stable with that reported for 2016, the number "remains worryingly high against a backdrop of damaging cuts to sexual health services", said Debbie Laycock, head of Policy and Engagement at Terrence Higgins Trust.

A total of 7,137 new diagnoses of syphilis were made in 2017, a jump of 20 percent on the previous year, and more than double the number recorded in 2012.

Syphilis and gonorrhoea cases have increased since the year 1949, as per the new data released on both the sexually transmitted infections (STIs) by Public Health England on Tuesday.

There were 44,676 diagnoses of gonorrhea reported in 2017, which represents a 22 percent increase from 2016 (36,577 cases). Local STI services can be located online via NHS Choices. This is mainly because gonorrhoea strains that are affecting people are becoming increasingly resistant to the antibiotics that are at hand.

In total, clinics treated 422,147 STIs infections in 2017, down 0.3 per cent on 2016. The numbers have risen by 13 percent in the last five years says the report.

Cllr Izzi Seccombe, the chairman of the Local Government Association's Community Wellbeing Board, said the rise in attendances was placing a "significant strain" on council resources. She said, "There is no time for complacency..."

Figures also showed a drop of 8 percent in the number of tests for chlamydia. According to the PHE, most of this decline has been seen in the SHS where testing for chlamydia has come down by 61 percent since 2015. They speculate that this reduction is not due to reduction in incidence of the infection but lack of testing. The recommendations also emphasize on high-quality relationships and sex education at schools.

Hughes also stated that STI's can cause a serious health problem for those who are infected as it can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility, and danger to unborn babies.

Consistent and correct condom use with new and casual partners is the best defense against STIs, and if you are at risk, regular check-ups are essential to enable early diagnosis and treatment.
