Tensions Run High at G7 Summit

Waving banners, lighting flares and setting flags alight, protesters from various groups marched through the city for two hours.

The protests, involving anarchists, anti-capitalists and environmentalists, were largely peaceful, but there was some trouble and tension between police.

Police in riot gear declared the protest illegal a few minutes after it began and encircled about 100 protesters who had blocked a road leading to the small town north of Québec City where G7 leaders are gathering for a two-day summit.

Anti-G7 protesters demonstrate in Beauport, Que. on Friday, June 8, 2018.

Protesters are expected to gather from 7:30am (local time) in Quebec City's Beauport borough to show their dissent to the summit and what it represents. "We are here to denounce the violence from the neoliberal policies of the G7 members". "And it's become urgent to say that we have this as an objective as the planet cries out in distress".

"The agenda might sound progressive, but experience shows that these handsome speeches will lead to nothing beneficial".

The meeting comes as US President Donald Trump continues to take a protectionist stance on trade.

"The reputation of the American orange monster is well established", the group says on its website.

Martin also hoped that the G7 leaders will discuss other pressing issues, such as climate change, gender equality, and the Compact for Africa initiated by Germany previous year when it hosted the G20 finance ministers and central bank governors' meeting to promote private investment in Africa, including in infrastructure.

"The goal of the G's - whether the G7 or the G20 - is to essentially give the pertinent ministers and the leaders the opportunity to deal with issues of this kind and hopefully prevent issues of this kind", explained Martin, who served as Canada's prime minister from 2003 to 2006, and as the country's finance minister from 1993 to 2002. "If it doesn't happen, we come out even better!" "And they understand it's going to happen", Trump said before departing for the summit in La Malbaie, Quebec.

Officials have conceded the mood at the summit will likely be exceptionally tense.
