Donald Trump, Kim Jong-un arrive in Singapore for historic summit

Kim's ventures in Singapore come ahead of Tuesday's historic summit with President Trump, which will be the first meeting between a sitting USA president and a North Korean leader.

Mr Trump lashed out at his allies as part of a demonstration of strength as he flew into Singapore, according to a senior White House adviser.

On the eve of a historic summit between US President Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un, Pompeo sounded an upbeat tone, saying that preparatory talks were advancing more quickly than expected.

In tamping down expectations, Trump himself has described this initial meeting as the start of a process.

But after Mr. Trump left the summit he announced he was pulling out of the statement, citing statements by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at a post-summer press conference, where Mr. Trudeau said Canada had been "insulted" by Mr. Trump justifying his tariffs on national-security grounds. It will certainly be an exciting day and I know that Kim Jong-un will work very hard to do something that has rarely been done before ... "We appreciate your hospitality and professionalism and friendship".

Pompeo devoted his prepared remarks (about five minutes) nearly entirely to disputing a New York Times report that the United States lacks the technical expertise to verify North Korean denuclearization.

This picture taken on June 8, 2018 shows Lee Eun-ho, a 70-year-old South Korean worker - who is critical about the Trump-Kim summit, during a street interview with AFP in Seoul. On the day before the meeting, weeks of preparation appeared to pick up in pace, with USA and North Korean officials meeting throughout Monday at a Singapore hotel.

It was a striking about-face from less than a year ago, when Trump was threatening "fire and fury" against Kim, who in turn scorned the American president as a "mentally deranged USA dotard".

Since the first USA atomic test in the desert of New Mexico on July 16, 1945 eight countries have conducted an estimated 2,056 nuclear test explosions, mostly in the late 1950's and early 1960's - the darkest days of the Cold War, according to data from the Arms Control Association.

He also shared a photo of himself and Trump and told the entire world that he's "honored" to call the president a friend. "My touch, my feel - that's what I do", Trump said Saturday in Quebec, where he was attending a G-7 meeting before heading to Singapore. In another article, the newspaper does not hide its disdain for Trump's "zero prep work" for the meeting and also credits Kim Jong-un as "the real artist" of the summit.

Kim held a meeting with Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong ahead of the planned summit. The two will later be joined by officials and have lunch together.

There was a sweet ending to the working lunch: an early birthday cake for Trump.

The despot took a break from official government business on Monday to take a mini tour with Singapore Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan, his sister and other top deputies.
