Donald Trump, Kim Jong-un to open historic summit with one-on-one powwow

Donald Trump, Kim Jong-un to open historic summit with one-on-one powwow

It was the first time that leaders from both sides met since Taiwan's separation from the mainland in 1949.

"Anytime that a president has a successful foreign-policy event, summit or outcome, it helps him in the polls for one reason: He or she is doing their job well, and the best politics is doing your job well", Kaufman told the Herald.

The Monday report from the Korean Central News Agency mentioned the summit agenda, including denuclearization and lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula.

The president was being accompanied on his trip to the Far East by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who has visited Pyongyang twice to prepare for the summit, and national security adviser John Bolton, a hardliner on dealing with North Korea.

It also offered a list of Pyongyang's talking points, saying Kim and Trump will exchange "wide-ranging and profound views" on establishing a new relationship, the issue of building a "permanent and durable peace mechanism" and realizing the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. This isn't like the United States and Iran.

Trump initially touted the potential for a grand bargain with North Korea to rid itself of a nuclear missile programme that has advanced rapidly to threaten the United States, insisting he would swiftly achieve what previous U.S. administrations have failed to do. "We have watched the struggles, and the sacrifices and the progress of the people", he said.

Trump pushed back on criticism that giving the North Korean leader a meeting with an American president was a major concession made with nothing of value received in return.

The talks have been portrayed by Trump in recent days more as a get-to-know-you session.

The meeting lasted more than two hours and took place at the Ritz Carlton.

As per the report, the U.S. president has said that if he thinks things are going badly, he will walk out of the meeting, but if things go well, the North Korean leader could receive an invitation to the White House.

Trump on Monday morning was upbeat: "Great to be in Singapore, excitement is in the air!"

Then came the New Year, an Olympics in South Korea and change.

U.S. President Donald Trump acknowledges he is heading into "unknown territory" in his summit with North Korea's leader, Kim Jong Un, in Singapore.

Richard Haas, president of the Council on Foreign Relations think-tank, said the G7 meltdown had put more pressure on Trump to cut a deal with the nuclear-armed Kim.

Numerous tough details in the North Korea talks are likely to wait for future rounds of talks at a lower level.

An aviation source in China said, "It probably cost a lot of money as well as representing a huge political burden to loan Kim the aircraft".

North Korean forces invaded the South in 1950 and the ensuing war saw US -led United Nations troops backing Seoul fight their way to a stalemate against Pyongyang's forces - which were aided by Russian Federation and China - before the conflict ended in stalemate and an armistice which sealed the division of the peninsula.

Trump expressed optimism about Tuesday's meeting during a working lunch with Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and aides to both leaders.

Mr Trump flew into Singapore's Paya Lebar Air Base aboard Air Force One, arriving just hours after Mr Kim.

He also thanked his Singapore hosts for their hospitality.

North Korea's delegation included Choi Sun-hee, a top diplomat who handles ties with Washington.
