Land Rover Discovery model moved to Slovakia from the UK

Land Rover discovery

Jaguar Land Rover is to move all production of its Discovery from the United Kingdom to Slovakia in a move that could lead to the loss of jobs.

The existing plant in Solihull, which now manufactures the Land Rover Discovery, is being retooled by Indian-owned Jaguar Land Rover to accommodate previous statements made by the company that all new models will be electrified by 2020.

JLR - which is owned by the Indian group Tata Motors - said that it remained "committed to the UK".

The company will enable the production of cars in electric, gasoline and diesel versions in Solihull, said the people, who asked not to be named because the information isn't public. Discovery production will be moved from the beginning of 2019, meaning job cuts at the Solihull plant are possible before it ramps up staffing again, the people said.

It has not put an exact figure on the level of investment in the Solihull plant, but it runs into hundreds of millions of pounds.

Once production is completed, customers will be given the choice of fully-electrified vehicles, as well as hybrid, petrol and diesel editions of Range Rover models. While some agency-employed plant workers may lose their jobs, the decision to build electric cars at Solihull marks a major commitment to United Kingdom manufacturing amid uncertainty over Brexit.

The company warned that there may be some job losses in the United Kingdom as a result.

The announcement comes weeks after profits at Jaguar Land Rover were nearly cut in half in the fourth quarter as the car-maker was stung by a combination of falling diesel sales, Brexit uncertainty and vehicle taxation.

The opening of the Nitra plant was originally meant to take pressure off JLR's United Kingdom factories, since the Solihull plant now handles all Discovery production.
