Lucas Torreira close to signing in £22m transfer

Lucas Torreira of Sampdoria holds off the challenge fron Mario Mandzukic of Juventus during the serie A match between Juventus and UC Sampdoria at Allianz Stadium

It has been widely reported that Arsenal have a transfer budget of just £50 million this summer, so it comes as no surprise that they would prefer to pay the fee for Torreira in instalments.

Arsenal are reportedly ready to make an approach for Sampdoria midfielder Lucas Torreira, who is said to be interested in a switch to the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners have already completed the first signing of Unai Emery's reign with the arrival of Stephan Lichsteiner on a free transfer from Juventus earlier this week. The Greek is due to sign a three-year contract with the Gunners with an announcement expected at the end of the month.

And according to Italian news agency ANSA, Arsenal are "close" to another acquisition in Torreira.

Any switch is unlikely to be imminent because Torreira will be in Russian Federation for the World Cup after making Uruguay's 23-man squad for the tournament.

Napoli have also been strongly linked with Torreira but it looks like Arsenal are now in pole position as TeamTalk are citing a report from SampNews24 that claims we've agreed to meet his £22m release clause.

The 22-year-old has developed in to one of the best defensive midfielders in Serie A since joining Sampdoria from Pescara two years ago and he's been named in the Uruguay squad ahead of this summers World Cup finals in Russian Federation.
