North Korea talks moving 'more quickly than expected'

Trump-Kim summit could be one of many

Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un are meeting in Singapore on Tuesday at around 9am local time and their historic summit will be the first face-to-face talks ever between a sitting American president and a North Korean leader.

Before flying to Singapore, Mr. Trump was in Canada for the G-7 summit with leaders from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the U.K. All seven leaders had worked out a joint statement stressing the importance of a rules-based worldwide trading system.

The White House said Trump would hold a one-on-one meeting with Kim on Tuesday on the small island of Sentosa.

"This will not be just a photo-op", Mr. Trump said last Thursday during a news conference after Prime Minister Shinzo Abe of Japan visited the White House.

The Rodong Sinmun, the mouthpiece of the Workers' Party, also featured his departure in a full-color two-page spread, declaring on the front page that he was leaving in a Chinese plane for a "historic summit" with the United States president.

Trump has said he hopes to make a legacy-defining deal for the North to give up its nuclear weapons, though he has recently sought to minimize expectations, saying more than one meeting may be necessary.

Trump and Kim are meeting Tuesday in what the US hopes will be the start of negotiations to eliminate North Korea's rapidly advancing nuclear weapons program.

"The upcoming summit between President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un stands a decent chance of success, even though the administration has flouted all the traditional rules of good summit planning", reads the report.

President Trump is expected to meet separately with Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Monday. But Trump has lashed out at reporters for suggesting that the meeting with Kim will result in him giving up any negotiating leverage.

Such characteristic caution notwithstanding, the prospect of the summit is generating a great deal of interest among every day North Koreans. It's where former Chinese President Hu Jin Tao stayed during the 2009 APEC Summit (and don't tell Trump, but Hillary Clinton stayed there in 2011, too).

The characteristic displays of pique were a potential distraction from the summit that Trump has hoped to make a legacy-defining moment and that aides and political allies have seen as a welcome break from the Russian Federation investigation and other domestic woes.

More than 2,500 journalists are in Singapore to cover the event.

The foreign minister of Singapore tweeted out a picture of the cake presented to Trump at the luncheon today in Singapore.

Trump advisers cast his actions as a show of strength before the Kim meeting.

He would not say whether that included the possibility of withdrawing USA troops from the Korean Peninsula, but said the context of the discussions was "radically different than ever before".

"I can only say this", Pompeo said.

"Thanks PM Lee for spending $20 million of taxpayers money, which can. help a lot of needy families in Singapore to survive", posted one Facebook user.

Trump initially touted the potential for a grand bargain with North Korea to rid itself of a nuclear missile program that has advanced rapidly to threaten the United States. Long-time U.S. allies like Canada and Germany protested Trump-backed tariffs on their exports, and threatened to retaliate with their own tariffs on USA products.

The US was prepared to offer certainty to North Korea so they could be "comfortable that denuclearisation isn't something that ends badly for them".

But Mr. Trump noted that negotiations on denuclearization would take more time. "That's what I do".
