Parkland shooting survivors preformed at Tony Awards

Drama teacher Melody Herzfeld, who sheltered scores of students in the school's drama room for more than two hours during the February shooting, was also in the audience on Sunday to accept a special Tony award for educators. She saved the lives of more than 60 students during the shooting on February 14, when a gunman opened fire and killed 17 people.

After an introduction from Glee star Matthew Morrison, the students took the stage to honor Herzfeld's win for the excellence in theater education prize during the awards, singing the familiar refrain from the popular musical number.

Herzfeld hid 65 of her students and staff in her office for several hours before authorities rescued them, earning her huge praise within the theatre community and beyond.

"All the goodness and tragedy that has brought me to this point will never be erased", she said from the stage at Radio City Music Hall, in Manhattan, ahead of the televised portion.

The students performed their rendition of Seasons of Love from the hit musical Rent, complete with a belted out and gutsy solo that drew well-deserved audience cheers. "We all want the same thing", she later said. Viewers moved by the performance quickly expressed their emotions on Twitter, and we were right there with them. To be heard. To tell our truth.

Herzfeld has staged over 50 shows at Stoneman Douglas since 2003.

On Sunday night, the Tony Awards were truly full of surprises.

The Drama class from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School perform at the 72nd Annual Tony Awards.

'I'll just be in my corner quietly sobbing'. "Melody, for your dedication to the arts, and the tremendous love for the young people in your care, we - all of us - thank you".
