Planet 600 Light Years Away From Earth Discovered by Indian Scientists

While the heat on the planet makes it uninhabitable, its discovery is important to help understand "the formation mechanism of such super-Neptune or sub-Saturn kind of planets that are too close to the host star". This has listed India among the countries which have discoveries of planets to their credit. We've already messed up our planet pretty badly, and even if we don't push the Earth completely over the edge ourselves there's the simple fact that no planet lasts forever.

Chennai: The scientists of PRL, Ahmedabad discovered a new planet (exoplanet) using PARAS spectrograph on Mt. Abu.

Paras spectrograph has also made independent measurements of the mass of the planet body as data from Nasa's K2 (Kepler2) photometry could not confirm the nature of the system. "Very few such spectrographs exist around the world (mostly in the United States of America and in the Europe) that can do such precise measurements", the space agency said on its website late on June 8. According to ISRO, the newly found planet rotates around a star similar to the sun, and takes 19.5 days to complete one rotation. The planet is about 27 times the mass of Earth and six times the radius of Earth.

The surface temperature of the planet is around 600C as it is very close to the host star (7 times nearer than Earth-Sun distance). Since the planet revolves around host star EPIC 211945201 or K2-236, it will be known as EPIC 211945201b or K2-236b - ISRO said.

The second red dwarf star that was detected with a new planetary system is K2-240, and this particular star features two large planets that are double the size of Earth.

Based on the mass and radius, model-dependent calculations suggest that the heavy elements, like ice, silicates, and iron content is 60 to 70% of the total mass.

The scientists observed the target over a time 420 days or about 1.5 years.

Two new solar systems, filled with their own worlds, have been found relatively close to our own. Also, they are extremely far away. It's very hard to discover an exoplanet because they are usually billions of times fainter than the stars they orbit.
