Supermodel's Checkered Flag Gaffe Ends Grand Prix Race Two Laps Early

The official in the flagstand at Sunday's Formula 1 race in Montreal waved the checkered flag a lap too soon.

According to ESPN, the error did not impact the race result, as first-place finisher Sebastian Vettel maintained a strong racing speed for what should have been the final lap, though he did message Ferrari with a warning that the flag had been displayed early.

The problem for Vettel and the rest of the drivers was there was still a lap left.

Fortunately, with the exception of the fastest lap, attributed to Max Verstappen instead of Red Bull team mate Daniel Ricciardo, the results were not impacted by the flag blunder. "I told them [his team] I don't think the race is over yet", Vettel said after the race, noting that the lap counter in his auto read 69.

The FIA claim the chequered flag mix-up at the Canadian GP was a result of simple miscommunication, but insist they will "review procedures" for future races.

Whiting believes that the starter was misled by the TV graphic that notes the lap that the leader is on, rather than laps completed - which is what happened in a similar situation in China a few years ago.

"Fortunately I had a lap count in the auto, and the pit board was accurate", he said. We all know that means we're on lap 69 but to someone who's a slightly more casual observer, might think "that must mean it's the last lap".

"I think that's where the doubt originates".

"We might need to look at other things, like the amount of people that get up there".

"We're dealing with different human beings, different countries, different languages and it's not always absolutely flawless".

"Of course we strive for perfection. They thought he was making a statement when in fact he was asking a question". At some races, fans also storm the track at a race's conclusion.

"This is part of the confusion".
