Tea for Two: What May Come of Trump-Kim Summit in Singapore?

Trump traveled to Singapore from Canada, where he a meeting with other world leaders.

The jet carrying Kim landed at the airport Sunday afternoon amid huge security precautions on this city-state island.

So you can only imagine how much Singapore is paying to have the North Korean leader and an entire army of bodyguards and government officials at the St. Regis.

Trump pushed back on criticism that giving the North Korean leader a meeting with an American president is a major concession with nothing of value in return.

"The worry we have is the president will be so eager for quote "an agreement" that it won't protect the security, first and foremost, of the United States", Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., told NPR on Tuesday.

Trump is set to meet with Lee on Monday.

The roads are blocked off along the routes Kim and President Trump will travel. The official wasn't authorized to discuss the plans and insisted on anonymity.

Along with an extensive security detail, the North Korean leader took his own personal toilet to the meeting.

Kim began the year by declaring to the world that "a nuclear button is always on the desk of my office", which was widely interpreted as an allusion to his personal control over North Korea's nuclear arsenal.

Dismantling a secret nuclear arsenal built up over decades would take several years and be extremely hard to check, they say.

The North has faced diplomatic and economic sanctions as it has advanced development of its nuclear and ballistic missile programs.

Tea for Two: What May Come of Trump-Kim Summit in Singapore?

The foreign minister of Singapore tweeted out a picture of the cake presented to Trump at the luncheon today in Singapore. Trump seemed to be working actively to define expectations downward following an Oval Office meeting last month with North Korean vice chairman Kim Yong Chol.

The sense of anticipation was palpable as Mr Trump headed to meet Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Monday, with people lining the streets waving cell phones.

"If you just look at it as, 'Give up your stuff, ' that framework is why we've been banging our head against the wall for so long", said John Delury, a North Korea scholar at Yonsei University in Seoul.

Part of the interest in Tuesday's summit is simply because Kim has had limited appearances on the world stage.

That could precede a full treaty which would raise complex issues needing extensive negotiation, and would need to involve China, which backed the North during the conflict and is a signatory to the armistice.

It's unclear what Trump and Kim might decide Tuesday.

The guards must be about the same height as Kim, BBC said. Past nuclear deals have crumbled over North Korea's reluctance to open its doors to outsiders.

But Chinese experts are also watching the talks for cues on how Trump carries out his self-described art of the deal - and what it means for U.S.

North Korean forces invaded the South in 1950 and the ensuing war saw USA -led United Nations troops backing Seoul fight their way to a stalemate against Pyongyang's forces - which were aided by Russian Federation and China - before the conflict ended in stalemate and an armistice which sealed the division of the peninsula. The ensuing recognition as a "normal country" could then allow sanctions relief, and later worldwide aid and investment.

He's also repeatedly expressed his support for a meeting between Trump and Kim - even offering to facilitate it or serve as an ambassador of sorts.
