United Airlines flight diverted to Ireland due to 'security concern'

A United flight was forced to make an emergency landing over security concerns from a possible bomb threat

A United Airlines flight from Rome to Chicago was diverted to Shannon Airport in Ireland on Monday after "a message" was discovered on board, Irish police said.

An emergency was declared at around 12.45pm by crew members informing air traffic controllers that they wished to divert in Shannon.

On the ground, authorities at Shannon implemented emergency procedures which involved mobilising its own fire service and alerting other statutory agencies. It landed at 2.15pm following a discovery of a suspicious message. Passengers disembarked 40 minute later.

A plane flying from Europe to the USA has been diverted after a cryptic note hinting at a bomb was reportedly found scrawled on the wall in the aircraft's bathroom.

A message suggesting there was a bomb on board was found scribbled on a surface in one of the jet's toilets.

A United spokesperson confirmed the events, releasing the following statement: "United flight UA971 en route to Chicago from Rome, diverted to Shannon following a potential security concern".

The airline said on Twitter that the flight was now canceled and would depart for Chicago on Tuesday.

Police were also taking handwriting samples from the passengers, the Irish Times reported.
