White House Economic Adviser: Canada's Trudeau 'Stabbed Us In The Back'

Donald's Trump's chief economic adviser said the U.S. pulled out of a G7 communique because the Canadian prime minister, Justin Trudeau, "stabbed us in the back" and accused the leader of one America's most important allies of playing a "sophomoric political stunt for domestic consumption".

"International cooperation can not depend on fits of anger or little words".

"Let's be serious and worthy of our people. We make commitments and keep to them", a statement from the French presidency quoted by AFP news agency said. We stick to it.

Trump swiftly responded to Trudeau by upending the communiqué in a series of tweets Saturday evening.

"It's actually not a real surprise".

Trump withdrew the United States from the global deal reached in Paris in December 2015 to curb global warming, and last month from world powers' July 2015 nuclear deal with Iran, asserting that it was one-sided in Tehran's favour.

And German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas tweeted on Sunday that Mr Trump had partly "destroyed" Washington's trusting relationship with Europe by pulling out of the joint communique. Not just double-crossing President Trump, but other members of the G-7, " Kudlow said.

Trudeau told reporters that imposing retaliatory measures "is not something I relish doing" but that he wouldn't hesitate to do so because, "I will always protect Canadian workers and Canadian interests". They report a really high surplus on trade with us.

The announcement and Trump's planned tariffs have also put him on a collision course with Trudeau, leader of another key U.S. ally.

"I have every desire to see our negotiations with Canada continue productively and beneficially, but Prime Minister Trudeau is sabotaging that cause by driving both sides into their corners instead of encouraging a more diplomatic dialogue", Krishnamoorthi continued.

He added: "Canadians are polite, we're reasonable but we also will not be pushed around".

He justified President Trump's decision to drop out of a joint statement made by G7 countries this weekend. And what did Trudeau do as soon as the plane took off from Canadian airspace?

European officials said Trump had tried to water down the language in the draft communique on the WTO and rules-based trade.

"A meeting six of the leaders hoped would end by de-escalating a budding trade war ended up accelerating it".

Canada's foreign minister, Chrystia Freeland, said her country "does not conduct its diplomacy through ad hominem attacks". She took particular issue with Trump's previous claim that imports of Canadian steel and aluminum had made USA steel and aluminum plants unsustainable, thereby threatening national security. He accused him of "sophomoric play" for insulting the United States during his press conference. "I, for one, would definitely cut a deal with the United States after that". "So, that is where the insult lies".

NAFTA was a key topic when Trump held a bilateral meeting with Trudeau on Friday, with Trump later saying they had a "very, very good meeting".
