Auburn's Jarvis Walks Off Gators

Gainesville Super Regional Game 2: Auburn evens series

Jarvis had the walk-off hit Sunday to clinch Auburn's 3-2 win and force a winner-take-all Game 3 of the Gainesville Super Regional at 8 p.m. on ESPN. O'Sullivan said it likely would be Leftwich. "We got two elite pitching performances (in this game), especially out of the starts and we got one today from our freshman Tanner Burns", Thompson said. "Hopefully we'll feed off that experience". He walked none and struck out six, and Tanner Burns matched him nearly frame for frame - the SEC All-Freshman right-hander fought his way around five walks and four hits to surrender just the one run over six-plus innings pitched.

On Monday night, O'Sullivan will turn to one of two talented freshmen for the start in the winner-take-all matchup: right-hander Jack Leftwich (4-5, 4.50 ERA) and Tommy Mace (5-0, 4.61). "They are not freshmen anymore. They've been through the SEC and pitched in high-level situations".

"Pandemonium", Jarvis said. "That's as cool as it gets like from a feelings perspective playing this game".

But UF was done in by some questionable baserunning decisions, an inability to come up with timely hits and its bullpen. Burns gave up five hits and an earned run in six innings, and Greenhill (6-2) surrendered a solo home run over the final three frames. As the home team in the second game of the regional, Auburn won the game in the bottom of the ninth with one out when senior second baseman Luke Jarvis lined a fastball from Byrne into the left-center field gap, scoring pinch runner Cade Evans from second base. Austin Langworthy drilled a leadoff home run to right field off Greenhill in the top of the ninth. After Butler fell behind the next batter, designated hitter Edouard Julien, 2-1, O'Sullivan summoned Byrne from the bullpen.

Pinch runner Cade Evans scored easily, flipped his helmet coolly off his head, then turned and sprinted with the rest of his teammates mob Auburn's hero behind second base.

The two teams traded single runs in the fourth inning with Florida's Nick Horvath driving in a run with a two-out double and Auburn's Steven Williams launching the 13th home run of his freshman season.

The score remained tied at 1 until the eighth inning. Liput got caught in the rundown between third and home long enough to get India to second base before being tagged out. I think, to a man, our team, coach, players, if they had somebody up there to be able to get a hit like that in a big ballgame to get the first Super Regional win in Auburn baseball history, that's significant. The Tigers turned three double plays in the game, including two behind Burns.

Freshman Jordan Butler (5-2) took the loss in relief of Florida starter Jackson Kowar, who allowed just one run over seven innings and left with the score tied at 1.

The College World Series brings on the most amount of pressure for college baseball players and Kansas City Royals draft pick Brady Singer has excelled during his appearances in the biggest event in the sport.

In the bottom of the eighth, Holland followed a Josh Anthony infield single with an RBI double into left-center off Byrne that gave Auburn a 2-1 lead.

"I don't know which pitching staff is the deepest, but we'll probably find that line tomorrow if the offenses show up", Thompson said. "Langworthy hit the big home run after we worked really hard to score the run and we come right back in the bottom half and found a way to score with Byrne on the mound".

E - Wright, B.(8). The senior strode to the plate 0 for 3 in the game, 0 for his last 12 overall and just 4 for 34 since postseason play began.
