Coca-Cola was founded by lemonade seller: Rahul Gandhi

Rahul trolled over ‘shikanji’ ‘dhaba’ remark By IANS Last updated Jun 12 2018 Share

Congress president Rahul Gandhi offered interesting analogies on Monday to argue that skilled OBC communities are being given short shrift by the Modi government, unlike overseas where the owner of Coca-Cola used to sell shikanji (lemonade) in the United States while the owners of McDonald's ran a "dhaba".

"'Our Prime Minister has not given a penny to our farmers for their work".

"Everyone including MPs is afraid to speak".

Addressing the conclave, Rahul said, "In a way, India has been enslaved by two or three leaders of the BJP and the RSS...."

"Narendra Modi, Amit Shah and Mohan Bhagwat will know the power of the people of the country and will also know that the country won't run on the wishes of 3 people, "he said". They will understand that three people can not run India. "It will be run by its people, its youth", he said.

The Congress president claimed that smaller businessmen couldn't grow in India and used the example of Coca-Cola to illustrate his point. He used to mix sugar in water.

"Everyone must have heard about the Coca-Cola company".

"His experience was respected, his ability was respected and he went on to form Coca-Cola", Rahul went on to say before drawing an extremely similar comparison and saying that the founder of McDonald's used to run a "dabha" (a roadside eatery). "It is that if the doors of bank are open for Ford, Mercedes, then doors of banks and politics are shut for our dhabawalas, mechanics and dhobis (washer people) and other backwards", he said.

It is to be noted that Coca-Cola was founded by American pharmacist John Pemberton in 1886 when he prepared a soda-fountain beverage which later became the marketed Coca-Cola drink. The analogies came at an OBC convention of the party, where Rahul sought to illustrate the point that unlike meritocratic systems overseas, the government was not giving opportunities and financial support to "highly skilled" backward communities in India. "We want to put you in the bus and give you the keys, while the BJP wants to put you in the bus and run the bus itself", he said. "Today our prime minister does not speak of employment and skill", he said. He accused the Congress of not taking any major initiative for the OBCs. "It is odd that Rahul Gandhi remembers the OBCs now". Mumbai Congress chief Sanjay Nirupam on Monday said more than 15,000 workers are expected to attend the event.
