'Don't expect too much': Rodman plays down Kim-Trump breakthrough

Donald Trump, Kim Jong-un arrive in Singapore for historic summit

As a rule, they would only report on the leader's movements after the event.

"I think the minimum would be a relationship". On several occasions in May, the United States had said it was likely that the meeting would be delayed, but the biggest hurdle was when the U.S. had called off the summit. Trump and Kim planned to meet one-on-one for most of an hour - joined only by translators.

That modest vision marks a break with the stratospheric goals he set after he agreed on March 8 to this meeting.

Trump is hoping to get Kim to agree to get rid of his nuclear weapons, though he has said it may take many more meetings to get to that point. The move was in reaction to North Korea's criticism of USA vice president Mike Pence's statement that the country could meet the same fate as Libya if it failed to meet a nuclear deal with the US.

"Trump will hype this relentlessly, no matter what comes of it", tweeted Robert E Kelly, a political science professor at Pusan National University in South Korea who is town to comment on the summit for the BBC. "Chairman Kim thanked Prime Minister Lee for Singapore's hosting of the US-DPRK Summit", the document adds. "It is a historic negotiation, and there is no way this president is not going to stand strong", Kudlowsaid.

Pompeo has disputed the notion that the president is moving the goalposts, telling reporters that Trump "has always understood that this was a process."
Before the announcement, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo seemed to hint that the outcome of the talks might not be what Trump has promised in the past.

On June 9, the day before Kim embarked on the 3,000-mile journey to Singapore from Pyongyang - the farthest he's traveled since taking the helm as leader of North Korea - state media published reports about Kim's visit to a newly opened seafood restaurant.

The clearest benchmarks about what the U.S.is seeking from the summit, however, have come from Pompeo rather than Trump.

Trump and Kim may well end up branding tomorrow's summit a success. "To all Americans and the rest of the world I'm honored to call President Trump a friend", he said.

"This move smells like one big investor because there wasn't a ton of volume for the fund on Friday", Balchunas said.

"It's unknown territory in the truest sense but I really feel confident", Trump said.

Pompeo's firm line on sanctions relief suggests that the U.S. is looking for a short transition toward denuclearization, according to Zhang Baohui, director of the Centre for Asian Pacific Studies at Lingnan University in Hong Kong.

Even if Kim offers only "a fine-sounding rhetorical commitment, and maybe a few missile surrendered or some site closures", he said, Trump will "market this thing as something extraordinary for his voters back home".

"People best not expect so much the first time", Rodman said.

"You know, the way - they say that you know if you're going to like somebody in the first five seconds". "The situation demands that all nations and peoples should go out to establish fair global relations", the paper says. "I could see Trump giving up a lot for very little in return".
