Medical cannabis oil confiscated from Billy Caldwell's mother at airport

Immigration authorities have confiscated potentially life-saving cannabis medication after a mother and her epileptic son returned from a 7,000 mile weekend round trip to collect it.

She says it is the only thing keeping her son Billy alive, because it helps alleviate potentially fatal seizures brought on by his severe epilepsy.

But last month the Home Office told her GP to stop continuing to provide the drug, or face being struck off.

"I am praying now that we can get medicinal cannabis accessible to all the other children, and give their mummies and daddies back their right to hope, but most importantly give their children back their right to life".

She also warned of the dangers of Billy missing his first dose of cannabis oil in 19 months.

She said she will be meeting Mr Hurd at the Home Office this afternoon to plead to get the oil back.

She told reporters that customs officers were "absolute gentlemen. really, really nice", and one even had tears in his eyes as they took the drug from her.

"I'm just going to turn around and go get some more; and keep doing so until the United Kingdom authorities see sense". The mum, from Castlederg in Co Tyrone, said she will declare the fact she is carrying the medication to airport officials on their return from Toronto, who could arrest her, confiscate the drug, or allow her to continue on her return journey to Northern Ireland with the medicine.

The Home Office has defended the seizure in a statement which said: 'The Home Office is sympathetic to the hard and rare situation that Billy and his family are faced with.

"Whilst we recognise that people with debilitating illnesses are looking to alleviate their symptoms, Border Force has a duty to stop banned substances from entering the United Kingdom", a spokesman said.

"The policing minister met Ms Caldwell and advised her that despite these extremely hard circumstances, it is unlawful to possess Schedule 1 drugs such as those seized at the border this morning without a licence", she added.

Billy started the treatment in 2016 in the U.S., where medical marijuana is legal.

He became the first person in the United Kingdom to receive a prescription after his local GP, Brendan O'Hare, began writing scripts.
