Now Daimler is enmeshed in its own 'Dieselgate'

The information comes from Bild am Sonntag newspaper and was brought to our attention by Automotive News.

Daimler's diesel nightmare continues.

The report of the devices - which modify an engine's exhaust management software to behave differently during emissions testing - closely mirrors the Dieselgate scandal that struck German carmaker Volkswagen in September 2015.

This morning, Daimler shares were trading 1.76 percent lower, at 61.19 euros, underperforming the Stoxx 600 Automobile index which was 0.48 percent lower.

KBA believes Daimler's Euro 6 diesels are emitting polluting gases in excess of what the regulations say and the exhaust systems of those cars are featuring manipulating control software.

Germany's road vehicle authority KBA has found five "illegal switch-off devices" in Daimler auto engines, newspaper Bild am Sonntag (BamS) reported on Sunday.

Daimler boss Dieter Zetsche has been summoned to meet transport minister Andreas Scheuer after Germany's KBA motor vehicle authority discovered "inadmissible defeat devices" in Mercedes-Benz engines.

Daimler declined to comment on the 1 million vehicles figure, but said it is cooperating fully and transparently with the KBA and Germany's Transport Ministry.

Germany can only order the recall of vehicles within its own borders, or of those vehicles issued with a pan-European road-worthiness certification via German authorities. That controversy has cost VW about $30 billion in fines.
