Obama's Secret Meetings to Back 2020 Candidate

Obama Has Been Quietly Meeting With And Advising 2020 Presidential Hopefuls

Barack Obama has been quietly meeting with a number of possible Democratic contenders for the 2020 presidential race, multiple sources tell Politico and CNN.

Among those Obama has met with in Washington, D.C. are Sens. Potential candidates including Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Joe Biden, and Deval Patrick have had one-on-one sitdowns with the former president at his Washington office in recent months, though, sources say, the subject of the 2020 race hasn't come up in numerous conversations. Cory Booker (D-NJ) a year ago.

Obama has reportedly held one-on-one sessions with at least nine candidates in his Washington, D.C., office over the past few months, including former Vice President Joe BidenJoseph (Joe) Robinette BidenDem rips Trump's call to include Russian Federation in G-7: What does Putin have on him?

The meetings reportedly tend to be long and varied, as the former President weighs in on everything from philosophy and ideology to logistics and messaging. Politico notes that donors and others in the party have hoped Obama would take a more public anti-Trump stance, and though he has not done that yet, privately he's urging contributions to the DNC. This was reportedly the second meeting of the two, as the pair had come together in spring 2017 after Warren criticized Obama for accepting large sums in exchange for his speeches and appearances.

Obama has also met with his former attorney general, Eric Holder, who may be considering his own run for president and is now working with the National Democratic Redistricting Committee. Kirsten Gillibrand and former Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe among them - who have not yet discussed campaign plans with Obama.

The Democrat did not describe these meetings as sessions where Obama gave each candidate specific advice about running for president - "This is not about where you put your Sioux City, Iowa office", the source joked.
