Over 600 homes destroyed by Hawaii volcano eruption

Lava flows across a highway on the outskirts of Pahoa during ongoing eruptions of the Kilauea Volcano in Hawaii, U.S., June 5, 2018.

An eruption at Kilauea summit jolted the area with the force of a 5.4 magnitude quake and hurled an ash plume that reached 10,000 feet above sea level.

Also present at the press conference, Hawaii Governor David Ige said state will allocate 12 million USA dollars to help respond to the eruption, covering expenses ranging from overtime work to food and equipment. A plume of toxic volcanic lava haze, called laze, stretched for miles.

Copernicus Sentinel-2 images from 23 May and 7 June 2018 show changes in lava flow from the Kilauea volcano on Hawaii's Big Island.

"How soon vegetation comes back on a lava flow really depends on the type of lava it is, and how much rainfall there is in the area", said Babb. That's almost 10 times the monthly historic average for seismic activity on Hawaii Island, according to the USGS.

Most of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park remains closed due to persistent earthquakes and eruptions of corrosive volcanic ash. "So, it's usually ohia and ferns that are the first pioneers of those new lava flows".

Lava continues shooting out of the ground, as high as 150-feet in the air, then travels all the way to the Pacific Ocean.

"Our responsibility is to try to work with the community to rebuild out of harm's way", Kim said. At least 117 homes have already been taken by lava in the Lanipuna Gardens and Leilani Estates neighborhoods where lava surfaced more than a month ago.

That latest toll of property losses from Kilauea's ongoing upheaval, which entered its 35th day on Wednesday, far surpasses the 215 structures destroyed by lava during all 35 years of the volcano's last eruption cycle, which began in 1983.

As of early Friday 24 separate fissures covered almost 8 square miles of land in lava.

Vacationland had about 150 homes and Kapoho, about 350 homes. They too are cut off and inaccessible.

"Over 600 homes destroyed by lava rivers in Hawaii", Kim told a press conference.
