South Korea Blindsided By Trump War Games Agreement

"Regarding the U.S. President Trump's comment regarding ending of the combined military drill and so on, we need to find out the exact meaning or intention behind his comments at this point", South Korea said in a statement.

President Trump said he believes that Kim Jong Un will begin dismantling North Korea's nuclear arsenal "virtually immediately" after the two leaders met in a historic summit in Singapore.

"We will stop the war games which will save us a tremendous amount of money", Trump told reporters during a press conference after his meeting with Kim.

"So I think the rhetoric, I hated to do it, sometimes I felt foolish doing it, but we had no choice", Trump told Hannity.

Hannity asked the president how Trump went from calling Kim "little rocket man" just months ago to the pair sitting down for a summit.

A reduction in USA troops on the Korean peninsula was not on the table in discussions with Kim, but Trump said that "at some point" he wants "to get our soldiers out".

About 28,500 USA troops are stationed in South Korea, a legacy of the Korean War, which ended in 1953 in an armistice that left the two Koreas technically still at war.

Trump explained during a post-summit news conference that inspectors will be sent into North Korea to verify the country is moving forward with denuclearization.

"I want to bring our solders back home, " Trump said, although he added that it's "not part of the equation right now".

"President Trump committed to providing security guarantees to the DPRK and Chairman Kim Jong-un reaffirmed his firm and unwavering commitment to complete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula".

However, relations with North Korea, which had seemed to go well, broke down under former President George W. Bush after the USA accused North Korea of having an enriched uranium program, a major step in the nuclear weapon building process.

"South Korea will have mixed feelings toward Trump's remarks", said Lee Il-woo, a director at Korea Defense Network in Seoul.

Admittedly, Trump said Kim was very pleased with the development.

According to the joint statement, both sides also agreed to recover and return remains of soldiers who were killed or missing in action during the Korean War so they can be repatriated.
