The Trump-Kim peace summit has been downgraded to a half-day

Singapore pays for Kim Jong Un's hotel during Trump summit

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un met Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong at his office in Singapore Sunday evening in his first diplomatic outing of his visit to the country ahead of Tuesday's landmark summit with U.S. President Donald Trump.

Marina Bay Sands is also home to a luxury 5-star hotel, shopping mall, convention center, museum, two theaters, multiple upscale restaurants, and two floating pavilions.

Kim, 72, has been Kim Jong Un's most trusted policy adviser since the North Korean leader began a peace offensive with the USA and South Korea in January.

US President Donald Trump arrives at Paya Lebar Air Base for a summit with North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un, June 10, 2018, in Singapore. There will then be a bilateral meeting that will include some of Trump's top advisers, followed by a working lunch. At 4pm, Trump is scheduled to talk to the media and leaving Singapore at 7pm.

North Korea's last test blast - its sixth - occurred last September and the country's official new agency described the weapon as an H-bomb, saying it demonstrated the country's "strength and stamina". Trump has also raised the possibility of further summits and an agreement ending the Korean War by replacing the armistice signed in 1953 with a peace treaty.

North Korea has previously said it was willing to discuss denuclearization, but experts have expressed concern over the varying definitions of the term held by Washington and Pyongyang.

The White House and State Department have said little about those talks, though people briefed on them said American negotiators found it difficult to make significant headway with the North Koreans, in part because the White House did not back them up in taking a hard line.

Singapore pays for Kim Jong Un's hotel during Trump summit

Trump spoke only briefly in public on Monday, forecasting a "nice" outcome. It's where former Chinese President Hu Jin Tao stayed during the 2009 APEC Summit (and don't tell Trump, but Hillary Clinton stayed there in 2011, too).

He accompanied the young leader at all four of his recent summits, twice with South Korean President Moon Jae-in and twice with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

It's so far unclear whether the US and North Korea will release some kind of joint statement or agreement following the sit-down.

Trump advisers cast his actions as a show of strength before the Kim meeting.

North Korea maintains an atrocious human rights record that is inextricably linked to its weapons proliferation.

"It was not easy to get here", Kim said, according to a translator.
