Trump administration moves to end asylum for victims of abuse and gangs

In this instance, he used a case involving a victim of domestic violence from El Salvador to rule that survivors of such "private" crimes are not eligible for asylum under USA law.

Dan Kowalski, editor of Bender's Immigration Bulletin, said the decision, subject to appeal in federal appeals court, could affect tens of thousands of people claiming asylum on grounds of domestic violence.

"Generally, claims by aliens pertaining to domestic violence or gang violence perpetrated by non-government actors will not qualify for asylum", Sessions wrote in 31-page decision.

Sessions has criticized the USA asylum system in the past, saying us immigration attorneys had exploited the law and had taken advantage of the country's "generosity".

Sessions' statement set the standard for immigration judges facing a massive surge in cases of undocumented immigrants. "It is nearly certain that women will be killed as a result of this decision that will return them to their abusers". "I understand that many victims of domestic violence may seek to flee from their home countries to extricate themselves from a dire situation or to give themselves the opportunity for a better life", he continued.

"Today's decision by the Attorney General is yet another attempt to close our doors, " Beth Werlin, executive director of the American Immigration Council.

In early May Sessions announced that any illegal border-crossers, including asylum seekers, would first be charged with a crime, and parents and children would be separated.

The Trump administration has accused migrants of exploiting the asylum system to gain entry to the United States, aware that the immigration courts are so backlogged that their cases could take years to complete.

Sessions overturned a key immigration case that had granted asylum to a Salvadoran woman who had been raped and beaten by her former husband.

Sessions' finding followed his unusual move to intervene personally in the case known as the "Matter of A-B-".

Immigrants say they have credible fear about returning to their home countries, so border agents have no choice but to place them in asylum proceedings.

Sessions also pointed out the U.S.is not responsible for alleviating all the problems in the world, and told immigration judges his decision will provide more clarity to help them rule fairly.
