Trump’s Trade Adviser Apologizes for ‘Inappropriate’ Trudeau Comments

"The United States and Canada are in a fight, obviously".

Trudeau, who had said at the news conference that Canada would retaliate for new USA tariffs, didn't respond to questions about Trump when the prime minister arrived at a Quebec City hotel Sunday for meetings with other world leaders.

Peter Navarro is President Donald Trump's National Trade Council adviser.

"I would rather [Canada] continue this great relationship here, but unfortunately our president is being incredibly disruptive and forcing you to rethink those relationships going forward", he said.

The relationship between the US and its allies was already off-balance after Mr. Trump just a week before the summit imposed 25% tariffs on steel and 10% tariffs on aluminum from the European Union and Canada. "It was very friendly". And I see the television and he's giving a news conference about how he will not be pushed around by the United States and I say push him around?

Trump followed up on Sunday with tweets calling free trade with Canada "fools trade" and said Trudeau "acts hurt when called out". The standard line from Republicans since the president came into office has been that they'll work with him when it's good for their states and the country, and oppose him when it's bad.

He added that Trump "is not going to let a Canadian prime minister push him around ... on the eve of this - he is not going to permit any show of weakness on a trip to negotiate with North Korea".

Rounds said he believed there would have to have been a significant "violation of trust" between G7 leaders for Trump to have responded in such a hostile manner.

Former Conservative cabinet minister James Moore, a member of the government's advisory group on NAFTA, hailed Trudeau's approach, refusing to react to "the noise, the bluster, the Twitter, the emotional outbursts". The U.K. and USA continue to enjoy a special relationship, she said, which means that "when we disagree with the United States, and with the President, we're able to tell them". President Donald Trump attacked America's closest allies in tweets after leaving the meeting in Canada. And I said, 'What's this all about?

For Republican Senator Jeff Flake of Arizona, the president's response was simply the incorrect way to treat a key ally. We just shook hands.

"Justin acts hurt when called out!" the US president said in his latest Tweet.

"That's why our allies have to be baffled at this". Eventually, a compromise was reached for the text, which reads: "We underline the crucial role of a rules-based global trading system". "It's just beyond the pale", he said.

Asked about Navarro's comments, Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland said, according to reporter Daniel Dale, "Canada does not conduct its diplomacy through ad hominem attacks".
