United Kingdom far-right clash with police at anti-Islam London rally

Police react with supporters of activist and commentator Tommy Robinson during a protest in Trafalgar Square London Saturday June 9

The protesters blocked off a major road near Trafalgar Square in central London, chanting "Free Tommy Robinson" and hurling smoke bombs at police.

The embarrassing incident was filmed by other Tommy Robinson supporters - presumably with the intent of turning it into viral content in support of the jailed right-wing activist.

Protesters descended on the capital for a rally in support of "Tommy Robinson", whose real name is Stephen Christopher Yaxley-Lennon.

Robinson was sentenced to 13 months in jail after he pleaded guilty on May 29 to contempt of court and breaching the terms of his suspended sentence.

A judge told Robinson, from Bedfordshire, his actions could cause the trial to be re-run, costing "hundreds and hundreds of thousands of pounds".

Hundreds of supporters crowded on to an open-top Megabus sightseeing vehicle waving Union Jack flags, while one supporter posed on the roof in a Donald Trump mask.

Bottles were reportedly hurled at officers and furious protestors ripped down metal barricades.

By 6pm, officers had removed protesters from the bus and had kettled numerous remaining protesters on the traffic island overhead.

Elsewhere, a man can be seen performing a Nazi salute, literal metres away from statues which commemorate the British soldiers who died fighting them in WW2.

Five officers were injured, none seriously, the police department said.

In total, the Metropolitan Police said that one person had been arrested for possession of an offensive weapon, two for assault on a police officer, one for possession of a flare and another for criminal damage to a bus.

Bottles and other objects were thrown at police, who retreated from side-streets after being overwhelmed by an angry mob in the United Kingdom capital who tried to reach the prime minister's residence. Five officers suffered minor injuries.

Six other men arrested for public order offences have also been released under investigation.

More than 600,000 people have signed a petition calling for Mr Robinson to be freed.
