White House aide apologizes over 'special place in hell' comment

Peter Navarro

Canadian tariffs were in place long before the summit and did not prevent Trump from initially endorsing the G-7 statement on trade.

Michael Hayden, the former Central Intelligence Agency director under Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama, blasted President Donald Trump Monday as "unstable" following his actions at the G-7 summit in Canada this weekend.

At a press conference on Tuesday, Trump said Trudeau's comments at a press conference after the G7 summit in Canada would "cost a lot of money for the people of Canada".

Trump's extraordinary outburst in recent days appeared aimed at striking a chord with voters who support his "America First" agenda.

Asked if he was apologizing for the comments, Navarro said, "yeah, absolutely".

Washington's decision to impose retaliatory tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum tariffs on June 1, Trump tweeted, was because of Canada's high tariffs on some US imports.

Yet some say it is past time to phase out the system, which limits dairy, egg and chicken production in Canada and imposes steep tariffs on foreign imports beyond a certain amount to keep the market from becoming saturated.

"There are more jobs now posted than there are people looking for work in the United States, and we've cut immigration pretty substantially", he said, noting that the country's birth rate is low. He complained that he had been blindsided by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's criticism of his tariff threats at a summit-ending news conference.

In the same set of tweets, Trump said: "Justin acts hurt when called out!"

The accusation of backstabbing does not comport with Trudeau's overall message, which was mild and echoed some of his previous statements. His anger appears to have been sparked by a news conference Mr Trudeau gave after the summit, in which he described as "insulting" the way the United States cited national security as a reason for the tariffs.

On Monday, MPs in the House of Commons approved a motion denouncing Trump's name-calling tirade and endorsing Trudeau's decision to stand his ground against USA tariffs and tweeted presidential threats.

The Liberal government is looking forward to seeing the details of the agreement that emerged from Monday's historic meeting between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, Trudeau said Tuesday as he arrived on Parliament Hill for his weekly cabinet meeting. Some of Trump's aides also lashed out at the Canadian prime minister.

TAPPER: So, this was about North Korea?

Rounds said he believed there would have to have been a significant "violation of trust" between G7 leaders for Trump to have responded in such a hostile manner. You know they put out a document, I don't know if you saw it.
