12 burning questions about the Trump-Kim Summit, answered

Most of us realize that the hysterical anti-Trump resistance has difficulty keeping its talking points straight. It wasn't until Trump's tenure that North Korea began testing an intercontinental ballistic missile and the bellicose rhetoric between the two leaders ramped up.

President Moon Jae-in is expected to be briefed personally by the USA secretary of state, who landed at Osan Air Base.

"Only five months ago, based on my conversations with this administration, I thought we were headed down an inexorable path toward a devastating war", Victor Cha, who was considered for the role of United States ambassador to South Korea for nearly a year by the Trump administration before being passed over, wrote in The New York Times on Tuesday.

Donald Trump waved as he walked down a red-carpeted staircase and got into a limousine.

Despite the confusion and disappointment among some, the summit managed to, for a time at least, reset a relationship that has always been characterised by bloodshed and threats.

Trump's embrace of Kim in pursuit of denuclearization has left North Korean defectors and human rights advocates like Jung Gwang-il feeling abandoned.

In August 2017, Pyongyang threatened missile strikes on Guam, the only United States territory easily in reach of North Korean missiles.

Most of all, I think they feel relief - relief they would not have felt, and certainly not to the same degree, if the Democrats hadn't drummed up hysteria about an impending war with North Korea.

The U.S. has demanded complete and speedy denuclearization of the North for fear that the subsequent verification process could be drawn out.

"Under the circumstances that we're negotiating a very comprehensive complete deal, I think it's inappropriate to have war games", Trump said of the joint military exercises that for decades have bolstered USA and South Korean readiness.

Experts have argued that the Trump-Kim statement fell short of achieving meaningful action towards denuclearization.

Mr Trump's surprise decision has however been met with caution in Japan.

US President Donald Trump disembarks from Air Force One upon arrival at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland on June 13, 2018, as Trump returns from the summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Singapore.

The president's suspension of the exercises came as U.S. Forces-Korea, led by Army Gen. Vincent Brooks, is preparing for the annual Ulchi-Freedom Guardian exercises later this summer with the South Koreans. It's true that Kim responded with heated attacks, and the rhetoric escalated on both sides, but the American president shouldn't be elevating a despot like Kim in the first place and further instigating confrontation.

TRUMP: "Chairman Kim and I just signed a joint statement in which he reaffirms his unwavering commitment to complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula". It called the summit "dumbfounding and nonsensical", and said it will allow North Korea to permanently maintain its nuclear weapons program. The next military exercise is scheduled for August.

In China, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told reporters that the fact that the two leaders "can sit together and have equal talks has important and positive meaning, and is creating a new history".

Last year, about 50,000 South Korean and 17,500 USA troops participated in Ulchi-Freedom Guardian, billed as the world's largest command-and-control exercise and aimed at defending against a North Korean attack. Compared to the insults and "fire and fury" threats of not so long ago, today's mutual talk of seeking peace and stability represents a great diplomatic leap forward.

About 29,000 U.S. soldiers are based in the South, under a security agreement reached after the war ended in 1953. He said he planned to continue sharing the view with Washington and Seoul.

The country's defence minister, Itsunori Onodera, said drills and the USA military presence in South Korea were "vital to security in East Asia".

Kim's vows to denuclearize were reported by state media Wednesday within that context - that Pyongyang would respond to easing of what it sees as the hostile USA policy with commensurate but gradual moves toward "the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula".
