Dixons Carphone admits huge data breach

Dixons Carphone data breach

Electronics retailer Dixons Carphone has suffered a massive data breach, with attackers accessing 5.9 million customer payment-card details and a further 1.2 million records containing personal information.

The company said there was there was an attempt to compromise 5.9 million cards in one of its processing systems for Currys PC World and Dixons Travel stores.

Dixons says it doesn't believe that the attackers have anything like the amount of data required to use the cards fraudulently.

The majority of these cards had chip and protection, according to the company, which said the data accessed did not contain pin codes, card verification values, nor any data enabling cardholder identification. It also confirms it has informed the UK's data watchdog the ICO, financial conduct regulator the FCA, and the police.

The company's shares lost 5% of their value when trading began on Wednesday morning shortly after the disclosure.

Alex Baldock, the company's new chief executive, apologised for the data for breach and admitted the firm had failed customers.

"We have taken action to close off this access and have no evidence it is continuing", the company said.

Because the data breach dates back to a year ago it will be dealt with by the ICO under the powers of the Data Protection Act 1998 and not the European Union General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) which went into effect on May 25.

Yesterday also saw Yahoo's United Kingdom arm fined £250,000 for a data breach in 2014 which affected more than 500 million users.

"We are determined to put this right and are taking steps to do so; we promptly launched an investigation, engaged leading cyber security experts, added extra security measures to our systems and will be communicating directly with those affected", he stated.

"The fact this only came to light now thanks to a review of the company's systems and data and actually occurred in 2017 is also cause for some concern", he said.

Dixons Carphone said it had no evidence that any of the cards had been used fraudulently following the breach.

'We are contacting those whose non-financial personal data was accessed to inform them, to apologise, and to give them advice on any protective steps they should take.
