Fyre Festival Promoter Arrested on New Set of Fraud Charges

Fyre Festival founder Billy Mc Farland hit with two new criminal charges

Billy McFarland, the low-rent scam artist responsible for the festival disaster heard 'round the internet, is back in trouble for conning people again.

McFarland now faces one charge of wire fraud and one count of money laundering on top of the charges he faced from the original Fyre Festival.

Investors in the festival scheduled for spring 2017 lost more than $26 million in what was advertised as "the cultural experience of the decade". An attorney for McFarland did not immediately respond to Variety's request for comment. He also said one of McFarland's colleagues, cooperating with prosecutors, was framing him.

Prosecutors said McFarland, 26, began running the scheme late a year ago, several months after his arrest for defrauding Fyre investors out of $26 million.

According to the U.S. Attorney, around March 2018 McFarland owned "NYC VIP Access", a company that purported to sell tickets to high profile events, but in reality no tickets existed.

"We vigorously contest what is in this complaint", his lawyer Randall Jackson told the judge. In the affidavit, Special Agent Racz writes that McFarland corresponded with potential customer-victims through Employee-1's email account - which, among other evidence, investigators say they determined was being logged into from an IP address associated with McFarland's parents' house in New Jersey. Each carries a maximum sentence of 20 years behind bars.

He pleaded guilty in March to two counts of wire fraud stemming from the April 2017 Fyre Festival debacle, in which attendees paid upwards of $250,000 for tickets to attend what McFarland's company billed as an ultra-luxurious music festival that turned out to be an ultra-chaotic mess.

"Mr. McFarland is looking at a significant term of imprisonment".

McFarland is reportedly now facing a new set of charges connected to a post-Fyre Festival ticket scam.
