[H]ardOCP: Uber Knows if You are Hammered

Uber will soon know if you're drunk and could refuse to pick you

The AI system identifies a user's level of intoxication based on how they're holding their phone. The system will also build up a database of typical behavior for each user which will be used to identify any deviation.

"To predict user state, the system compares data associated with the trip request to data about past trip requests submitted by the user".

Uber may implement a system that determines if users are behaving like their usual selves.

The patent adds that users judged to be drunk could be barred from pooling with other customers, or could have their pick-up or drop-off points changed to a safer location.

However, experts fear it may allow drivers to undertake "drunk hunting".

It's unclear if drivers will be given this information assuming the patent is granted, but it stands to reason they will, in order to better serve the riders and understand who their passengers are.

But, of course, notifying a driver beforehand could set a few liabilities in motion: Like, as The Verge hypothesizes, motivating a driver to decline picking up Sloshy McSlosherson, which, to the wasted, could be code for, "You're too drunk, drive home instead".

WTF?! Ask any Uber driver, or taxi driver, for that matter, what the worst part of their job is, and many will say it's dealing with drunken passengers.

It's not yet clear how advanced the research on this technology is or how accurate it would be. "We file patent applications on many ideas, but not all of them actually become products or features". That means it would, theoretically, know if that is not how that person normally operates Uber.

The authors of this patent application are current or former members of Uber's Trust & Safety team.

He's seen it way too many times.

Motion sickness can be induced by VR technology as a result of a lag occurring between simulated motion and real motion, according to Motherboard. The official report says the company is working on artificial intelligence tech for this new patent.

Theoretically, knowing whether a passenger is intoxicated or exhausted would not result in the fare being denied, but would rather lead to the passenger being paired with a more experienced driver, Uber says.
