Ivanka's 'Chinese proverb' praise for Trump-Kim summit confuses China

She wrote on Monday: "Those who say it cannot be done, should not interrupt those doing it", attributing the phrase simply as "Chinese Proverb".

China's internet was quick to respond, as people were puzzled by the reference.

"[My editor] really can't think of what exactly this proverb is".

In a Weibo post, the Global Times newspaper also traced the origins of Trump's phrase to a 1903 news article, and said: "The truth is that the phrase quoted by Ivanka has actually no relation to China".

The first daughter and senior presidential adviser sent off what seemed to be a note of encouragement as her dad sat down in Singapore with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Soon after the Chinese were on the case, American social media users had grabbed hold of this new meme with delight.

In thousands of comments on Weibo, users proffered scores of different suggestions without arriving at a consensus.

Some suggested the proverb "the foolish old man removed mountains" - a common phrase used to signify perseverance.

One website suggested it originated in the United States itself at the turn of the 20th century.

Confucius says Ivanka Trump made a proverbial social media gaffe.

They also offered some snarky commentary, including one person who said, "Don't mistake something as a Chinese proverb simply because it's written in Chinese characters".

"She saw it in a fortune cookie at Panda Express", one user wrote.

The ridicule was present stateside, too, where conservative writer and ardent Trump critic Bill Kristol lambasted her over the proverb.

Ivanka Trump has become the butt of jokes yet again after being accused of sharing a "fake Chinese proverb" on Twitter.

Ivanka Trump has found herself the subject of Twitter mockery after misattributing a quote as an old "Chinese proverb".

Bill Kristol, editor of the U.S. political magazine the Weekly Standard, tweeted a guess that the phrase "seems in fact to be American from the turn of the 20th c. - which makes sense, since its spirit is can-do Americanism".

"Why are Trump WH aides giving our proverbs to China, increasing our proverb deficit?"
