Japan warns US-South Korea drills 'vital'

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un visits the Marina Bay Sands hotel in Singapore on Monday

While most of the agreements confirmed to have come out of the Trump-Kim summit were pretty straightforward, advancing on the already discussed denuclearization, the meeting also ended with an announcement that the USA will suspend all joint military exercises with South Korea.

He called the drills "provocative", and said ending the exercises will also save the USA money. But "I've never agreed with 100 percent of what this president says off the cuff like that". It does not, for instance, include an agreement to take steps toward ending the technical state of warfare between the USA and North Korea.

In his post-summit press conference, Trump alleged that China was relaxing sanctions at its North Korean border as the situation improved.

"War games are very expensive", he said, raising the issue of their cost.

Speaking briefly, hours after the historic talks in Singapore, Abe also said he was pleased that the United States leader had raised the emotive issue of Japanese abducted by Pyongyang. "China can see some shocking resemblance to Nixon coming to China with Trump and North Korea", said Yun Sun, a China analyst at the Washington-based Stimson Center.

One of the best stock market strategies in recent months has been to bet on companies in South Korea that stand to benefit from strengthening relations with their northern neighbour.

"North Korea has committed to a complete denuclearisation".

US military drills with South Korea and Washington's troop presence there are "vital" for regional security, Japan said on Wednesday, raising concerns after US President Donald Trump said the drills would be halted.

The KCNA report - which was also carried by the Rodong Sinmun, official newspaper of the ruling Workers' Party - also claimed that the president pledged to suspend military drills with South Korea, and lift sanctions on the North.

The U.S. top diplomat is jetting to South Korea to brief the country's president as Asian allies try to parse the implications of the extraordinary nuclear summit in Singapore between President Donald Trump and North Korea's Kim Jong Un.

It also did not mention points raised later by Mr Trump around the abduction of Japanese citizens, human rights abuses or the withdrawal of U.S. troops.

However, dismantling Pyongyang's nuclear weapons programme will present a daunting challenge. "And number two, it really is something that I think (North Korean officials) very much appreciate".

Shares in Butan Industrial dipped further off their recent highs following Trump's get-together with Kim Jong Un, closing around 10% lower.

"Defense Secretary Jim Mattis used an approach that aides say can work: 'He says, 'Your instincts are absolutely correct, ' and then gets him [the president] to do the exact opposite of what his instincts say, '" The Journal wrote, citing a person close to the White House.

Hyuki Ahn, who is the Jecheon, South Korea, society president of the Sister Cities Association of Spokane, said she has been talking with siblings in South Korea daily about the summit.
