Kim summit agreement: Read the full text here

Despite being regarded as a first step towards denuclearisation, the North Korean Supreme Leader was credited for creating conditions for peace following his historic meeting on Tuesday with Donald Trump.

Shi Yinhong, an global relations expert at People's University in Beijing, said Trump's pledge to halt military maneuvers is, from China's perspective, nearly "too good to be true".

The reports hailed Kim for "steering the geopolitical situations surrounding the Korean Peninsula and opening a new chapter in relations between North Korea and the USA with energetic external activities".

"North Korea is a real and present threat", Schiff said in a tweet.

"Kim Jong-un and Trump had the shared recognition to the effect that it is important to abide by the principle of step-by-step and simultaneous action in achieving peace, stability and denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula", KCNA said.

The drills - often called "war games" - are held in South Korea with local forces and USA soldiers stationed there.

Trump's comment on suspending joint exercises with Seoul have caught South Korea's Defense Ministry and US forces in Korea off guard.

Addressing the media briefly after their handshake Trump said while sitting next to Kim: "It's my honor - we will have a terrific relationship, I have no doubt".

"You know, we're spending a fortune, every couple of months we're doing war games with South Korea, and I said, 'What's this costing?' We're flying planes in from Guam, we're bombing empty mountains for practice", Trump said.

North Korea's state media also hailed the summit as a success, including highlighting Trump's surprise announcement after the summit that the United States would stop military exercises with South Korea.

Singapore Summit news hub is now active on the AP News site and the mobile app. "They regard North Korea as a bulwark against American encroachment", Mr Broinowski said. Pompeo was slated to fly on to Beijing later Thursday.

How did South Korea react?

The US stations about 30,000 troops in security ally South Korea to protect it from its neighbour, which invaded it in 1950 in an attempt to reunify the peninsula by force.

A day after President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un held their summit in Singapore, is it clearer whether President Jae-in played a positive or negative role?

Critics in the United States said the joint statement by the two leaders was short on detail and that Trump had made too many concessions to Kim, whose country is under U.N. sanctions for its nuclear and weapons programs and is widely condemned for human rights abuses.

Asked by reporters how he felt after the historic meeting at a luxury resort in SIngapore early on June 12, Trump responded: "I feel really great. The world will see a major change". The next scheduled major exercise, involving tens of thousands of troops, normally would be held in August.

White House officials have repeatedly stressed that this week's meeting in Singapore is the beginning, not the end, of a process that Trump's team argues could have only been jump-started with the face-to-face meeting.

"The US-South Korea joint exercises and USA forces in South Korea play significant roles for the security in East Asia", Japanese Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera told reporters Wednesday.

In South Korea, the liberal Kyunghyang Shinmun newspaper said Trump and Kim have started a "march of peace" to end almost seven decades of hostility and pave the way for permanent peace and prosperity on the peninsula. But if Trump seeks re-election in 2020, his government is likely to apply more pressure on North Korea to make substantial progress in denuclearization, which could bring the nuclear issue to another critical point, said Shin Beomchul of Seoul's Asan Institute for Policy Studies. He said North Korea is likely to consider Trump's decision a temporary measure while it remains in negotiations with Washington.
