North America defeats Morocco to host 2026 World Cup

The North American bid collected 134 votes to the 65 for Morocco, which has now failed in five bids to host a World Cup.

Either North America or Morocco will earn the right to host the 2026 World Cup when the vote is conducted at the FIFA Congress in Moscow.

"Thank you for entrusting us with the privilege of hosting the FIFA World Cup in 2026", Carlos Cordiero, president of the US Soccer Federation told Congress. "Football today is the only victor".

At the end of its technical meeting ahead of the World Cup finals which gets underway this week in Russia, FIFA announced that changes will be made to the way that the world rankings of worldwide teams are calculated, switching to a method that add or subtracts points from a country's total rather than averaging them over a multi-year period.

The 2026 World Cup will have 48 teams playing a total of 80 games - 60 are planned in the USA and 10 each in Canada and Mexico.

North America defeats Morocco to host 2026 World Cup

Finally, the FIFA World Cup is almost upon us, which means that it's time to tune in and see the biggest soccer tournament in the world from Russian Federation. Mexico also hosted in 1970 and 1986.

The vast majority of World Cup sponsors are from Europe, North America and Asia, and, while African companies agreed deals during the 2010 South African World Cup cycle, and South American companies did so around Brazil 2014, neither region agreed deals for Russian Federation 2018.

Qatar, who will host in 4 years' time, will mark the first time the tournament is played during winter months because of the nation's high temperatures during summertime.

Morocco lost again with its fifth bid campaign in the past 30 years, including to the USA for the 1994 World Cup.
