Six things we learned from historic US-North Korea summit

Joint U.S. and South Korea military exercises occur regularly on the Korean Peninsula and have long angered North Korea, with Mr. Kim - like his father and grandfather before him - having called the drills a preparation for invasion of the North and seized on them as an impetus for hurling threats at Washington and Seoul.

"We may be able to recoup a little bit of that, but I think it is a cost that we're willing to pay and it's our contribution to an global endeavor, which is in our profound interests", he added.

The world can be glad of one thing after U.S. President Donald Trump's summit meeting with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un: They're still talking.

President Donald J. Trump of the United States of America and Chairman Kim Jong Un of the State Affairs Commission of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) held a first, historic summit in Singapore on June 12, 2018. -South Korea joint military exercises, which Trump unilaterally declared in his post-summit press conference.

Pyongyang has demanded the end of what it calls a "hostile policy" towards it, but in public has only pledged to pursue the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula - a euphemism open to wide differences of interpretation. He said the United States is working on the issue with South Korea, and Japan-as well as with China, but "to a lesser extent". "You know, he can have a membership at Trump National", Graham said on CBS, referring to Trump's golf course.

The war games are very expensive, we pay for a big majority of them. "I'm a realist. I'm not trying to bring democracy to North Korea".

"No one has shown more contempt for other nations and for the well-being of their own people than the depraved regime in North Korea", Trump said at the time.

Trump and Kim arrived not long ago on Singapore's Sentosa Island, the site of their unprecedented summit. Kim twice meet Moon and also made two trips to China to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Trump yesterday met Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong (李顯龍), was feted at lunch with an early birthday cake (his birthday is Thursday), and then went back to his hotel, the Shangri-La. And I believe North Korea and when I came home, I couldn't even go home.

Trump said the US will be monitoring the situation in North Korea to be sure that Kim is committed to dismantling his country's nuclear program.

Pressed on the fate of Otto Warmbier, the USA student who died after being held in North Korea, Trump said relations started to change with Pyongyang at around the time of Warmbier's death.

"Without Otto this would not have happened", Mr Trump said.
