South Korea seeks clarity from United States after Trump-Kim summit

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is praising President Trump's "realistic" approach to negotiations with Pyongyang, North Korea's leading state-run newspaper reported Wednesday after the landmark summit between the two leaders.

"Everybody can now feel much safer than the day I took office", Trump said on Twitter.

President Donald Trump's announcement Tuesday of the suspension of joint military exercises with South Korea appeared to catch U.S. Forces-Korea and members of his own party by surprise, but Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said he was consulted beforehand.

"We're hopeful that we can achieve that in, what was it, the next two and half years", the top American diplomat said when asked how soon the USA wanted to see North Korea move to dismantle its nuclear weapons program.

"Before taking office people were assuming that we were going to War with North Korea". In his media briefing in Singapore on Tuesday, Trump mentioned ending the drills, which he described - in language similar to that used by North Korea - as "provocative", saying it would save the the US money.

Also, the US forces stationed at South Korea admitted that Department of Defense or the Indo-Pacific Command had given them "no updated guidance on the execution or cessation of training exercises" and hence will continue to coordinate with their Seoul counterparts and maintain their current positions until further notice.

The meeting, long sought by Pyongyang, will be the first ever between a serving USA president and a North Korean leader, and will focus on the nuclear bombs and ballistic missiles the North has spent decades developing.

As Trump acknowledged that denuclearisation would not be accomplished overnight, the North suggested on Wednesday that Trump had moved away from his demand for complete denuclearisation before United States sanctions on the long-isolated country are removed.

North Korea has long objected to the drills as a security threat.

It's an appalling reality, but that's the world we live in so I suppose we need to show gratitude when two leaders are willing to agree not to annihilate each other's populations #ThankyouforNotNukingUs. Even if this meeting doesn't lead to any breakthroughs - and there's good reason to be skeptical of that - a future U.S. president may be glad that Trump threw away that old rule book and gave him or her a freer hand.

Warmbier's parents, Fred and Cindy Warmbier said they appreciated Trump's comments.

The US stations 28,500 troops in security ally South Korea to protect it from its neighbour, which invaded in 1950 to try to reunify the peninsula by force. Defence Secretary James Mattis' chief spokeswoman, Dana W. White, told reporters he was "in full alignment" with Trump.

Kim Yong-hwa, another defector, who is part of group that uses the ocean current to send rice to the impoverished North, had also come to believe that Trump was committed to end Kim's repressive rule.

But the new epoch envisioned here by Trump and Kim may be one in which the United States loses its grip on Asia, and then the world, and the new future will likely be ruled from Beijing, not Washington. While I know @potus is trying to butter him up to get a good deal, #KJU is NOT a talented guy. -South Korea military exercises along the demilitarized zone separating the two Koreas, a tangible concession that drew criticism from a number of lawmakers back home.

Trump and Kim were returning to their respective strongholds following the talks - but to far different receptions. -South Korean drills was met with concern. He said he planned to continue sharing the view with Washington and Seoul.

"If North Korea is no longer an issue, then what is the goal of leaving the troops here?"
