Trump: Trudeau criticism will cost Canada `a lot of money´

Lindsey Graham on Tuesday suggested that if North Korean leader Kim Jong Un attempts to renege on a deal with Donald Trump, he could end up on the U.S. president's bad side - just like the leader of one of the US's closest allies, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

"Let me correct a mistake I made", Navarro said at a Wall Street Journal conference, according to video provided by the Journal's CFO Network. And I say, push him around?

Days later, Trump said that he had left the summit at that stage and was aboard Air Force One en route to Singapore when Trudeau gave the press conference.

Trump's threat comes after Trudeau defended Canada during the G7 summit in Quebec over the weekend, saying his country "will not be pushed around" in regards to the Trump administration's tariffs on steel and aluminum.

At his closing G-7 press conference on Saturday, Trudeau called USA steel and aluminium tariffs "insulting" and pledged to proceed with previously announced retaliatory tariffs.

"I see the television and he's giving a news conference about how he "will not be pushed around" by the United States".

For his part, Trudeau cheered Trump's bid to broker a deal to rid the Korean Peninsula of nuclear weapons, but he stayed mum on the president's persistent trash talk. Kudlow told Tapper that Trudeau "did a great disservice" to the G7, and said that Trudeau had attacked Trump for "domestic consumption".

Canada has announced retaliatory tariffs on $16.6-billion worth of US goods, from steel and aluminum to orange juice, pickles and bourbon.

A spokeswoman for Mr Trudeau, Eleanore Catenaro, declined to comment on Mr Navarro's acknowledgement of a mistake.

After the G7 summit, Trump blasted Trudeau as "dishonest & weak", and a top Trump adviser said there was a "special place in hell" for the Canadian prime minster.

"That's going to cost a lot of money for the people of Canada", Trump said in Singapore.

"I think the first-hand interaction is likely to be a stronger factor than anything the president says", he said.

"I know it didn't look friendly", Trump said. "(Trudeau) learned. You can't do that.

The insults stemmed from a closing G7 press conference on Saturday in which Trudeau called USA steel and aluminum tariffs "insulting" and pledged to proceed with previously announced retaliatory tariffs.

In response, Trudeau, who has vowed to defend the system, made a point of making an unannounced visit to a "downtown diner" set up near Parliament Hill by farmers to demonstrate the high-quality food supply management helps provide.

"If it goes on for a while - and it would have to go on for a while - people might change their views, but I don't think this one incident is likely to have that effect".

A recent report by the Peterson Institute for International Economics found that blanket 25-per-cent tariffs on automobile imports to the US, including auto parts, would reduce production by 1.5 per cent and could cause job losses of 195,000 in the USA over the first three years, and would affect $200 billion in US imports.
