Trump ‘can’t jump ahead’ in North Korea negotiations: Leon Panetta

Who gained and who lost what from the Trump Kim summit

Fox News's Sean Hannity delivered the most viewers of any show on broadcast or cable television Monday night, drawing 5.9 viewers for his broadcast from Singapore while covering the summit between President TrumpDonald John TrumpSanford at risk in primary shadowed by Trump McConnell cements his standing in GOP history Ready for somebody?

Despite the omission, in an interview with ABC News, President Trump said he believes North Korea will abandon all their nuclear weapons.

"This is their life and their future", she said. "So, I think the rhetoric - I hated to do it, sometimes I felt foolish doing it - but we had no choice", he told Hannity.

Heading into Tuesday's summit, the big competing items on the table came down to what by now are popular acronyms, with the United States seeking the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula, or CVID (complete, verifiable, irreversible denuclearisation), and the North Korean leadership rejecting unilateral nuclear disarmament while seeking its survival, or CVIG (complete, verifiable, irreversible guarantee of North Korea's security).

During his talk with Hannity, Trump said his inflammatory rhetoric helped spur this new meeting.

Still, after the summit, Trump applauded the North Korean leader and said the people "love" Kim, regardless of Trump's previous remarks denouncing the regime's purported human rights abuses. "Was he committing to end all military exercises or was he committing to end just the most provocative ones?"

"The American military presence in South Korea wouldn't mean much if the militaries don't practice through joint drills", said Moon, now a senior analyst for the Seoul-based Korea Research Institute for National Strategy.

If the country did something "very bad and very threatening and awful", then past presidents wouldn't react, Trump commented during the interview that followed his Singapore summit with Kim.

But Daniel Davis, a retired army lieutenant colonel and fellow at the Defense Priorities military think tank, said suspending the drills would have no short-term impact on US and South Korean military readiness.

Trump has now essentially adopted the standard North Korean line, calling the military exercises a "provocative" drain of money and announcing they would stop while he continues talks with Kim, whom he repeatedly praised as a solid negotiating partner.

Richard Haass, president of the Council on Foreign Relations, said it was "troubling" that Trump had agreed to suspend joint drills without making any reference to North Korea dialling back its conventional military threat.

"The Singapore summit statement is essentially aspirational: no definitions of denuclearisation, no timelines, no details as to verification", Haass said on Twitter.

North Korea last month broke off a high-level meeting with Seoul over South Korea's participation in a two-week military exercise with the United States.
