Trump cites ‘special bond’ at summit with Kim Jong Un

Meeting on the Island of Death From Behind The Kim Trump Summit

The unprecedented encounter in Singapore Tuesday saw the leader of the world's most powerful democracy shake hands with the third generation scion of a dynastic dictatorship, standing as equals in front of their nations' flags.

To former South Korean foreign minister Yoon Young-kwan, Trump's attempt to start at the top with a political rather than narrowly military approach to North Korea nevertheless sets it apart from all that went before.

However, Wednesday's report - the North's first official account of the landmark summit in Singapore - suggested that Trump had directly conveyed the same commitment to Kim after the North Korean dictator had called on Trump to quickly address "irritating and hostile military actions", a longtime grievance of the Kim regime.

Trump and Kim met on Tuesday in Sentosa, a small island off Singapore's southern coast, after months of uncertain negotiations and decades of icy relations between their two countries.

Pyongyang has reason to feel confident after the meeting which was a major coup for an isolated and heavily sanctioned regime that has long craved worldwide legitimacy.

Mr Trump said Mr Kim and other senior members of the North Korean delegation huddled around an iPad to watch the video, which looked like it has been made using generic stock images and news clips. So number one we save money, a lot, and number two, it really is something that I think they [North Korea] very much appreciate. "We're going to have a great discussion and will be tremendously successful".

During the summit, Mr. Trump and Mr. Kim signed a joint statement in which the North Korean leader broadly "reaffirmed his firm and unwavering commitment to complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula". -South Korea military exercises while talks with the North were continuing.

The defense chief added that Japan would continue its own joint exercises with the US and would stick to plans to boost its defense against the ballistic missile threat from the North.

Kim said that the "world will see a major change" and he and Trump "decided to leave the past behind" as they put pen to paper.

It added that denuclearization on the Korean peninsula would be dependent on the two sides "refraining from antagonizing... each other out of mutual understanding". When asked why, Trump said on Tuesday: "Because there's no time".

North Korea is believed to possess more than 50 nuclear warheads, with its atomic program spread across more than 100 sites constructed over decades to evade worldwide inspections.

Less than an hour later, Trump tweeted a greeting to the autocrat he once mocked as "little rocket man": "Thank you to Chairman Kim, our day together was historic!"

Trump said aides would begin additional talks soon and said he would potentially invite Kim to the White House and be open to a visit to Pyongyang "at the appropriate time".

World powers from China to Japan, the European Union and Russian Federation welcomed its outcome - while cautioning it was only the first step towards resolving the nuclear stand-off with Pyongyang.

"North Korea is a small and weak country surrounded by big powers and that has made North Koreans paranoid about their own national security and develop nuclear weapons, " said Yoon, speaking on Bloomberg Television. Trump grasped Kim's right arm as they shook, and then, later, took hold of Kim's left arm as they turned to face the cameras and the world, both their expressions momentarily deadening before they turned to face each other again, and smiled.
