Trump trade adviser: Harsh comments against Trudeau were a ‘mistake’

All right or all wet? Trump trade advisor Peter Navarro blames China for the decline in U.S. manufacturing employment

"My mission was to send a strong signal of strength", Navarro said at the event, the Journal reported.

Mr Navarro reportedly said on Tuesday his remarks were a mistake and his language was inappropriate.

He made the apology - something that former USA ambassador to Canada Bruce Heyman, among others, was demanding that he do - during a Wall Street Journal event today in Washington.

Canada's prime minister earned Trump's ire by giving a press conference, after the United States president left La Malbaie, in which he spoke critically of U.S. trade policy and said Canada would "move forward with retaliatory measures" in response to Trump's move to impose tariffs on aluminum and steel.

Navarro's willingness to walk back his outburst marked a departure from the Trump administration's never-say-you're-sorry approach to political crises.

Navarro, for his part, suggested that he was following orders - but made a poor choice of words in doing so. "I own that; that was my mistake, my words". He also called Trump's meeting with North Korean ruler Kim Jong Un Tuesday "far more important" than the G-7. He also said the US had a trade deficit of $17 billion with Canada, though he implied that it might be as large as $100 billion.

Mr Trump called him "very dishonest and weak" in a tweet after Mr Trudeau repeated criticisms of United States tariffs on imported steel and aluminium and Mr Trump's trade policies in a news conference following the Group of Seven meeting in Quebec. He blamed Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's statement afterward that Canada would not be "pushed around". "I really did. Other than he had a news conference that he had cause he assumed I was in an airplane and I wasn't watching". When asked by the Journal interviewer if he was apologizing, Mr. Navarro said, "Yes, absolutely".

Trump has consistently railed against what he claims are unfair trade practices by some of America's biggest trade partners, including Canada - in particular Canada's supply management system, which levels tariffs of up to 300 per cent on imported dairy products.

Mr Kudlow later suffered a "very mild" heart attack, the White House said Monday, but was in good condition. "And it won't even be tough".

Bruce Heyman, a former USA ambassador to Canada, tweeted that Mr. Navarro should "formally and publicly apologize to Justin Trudeau and more importantly the Canadian people for his insulting and inappropriate remarks".

The United States has alienated Canada and other allies by imposing tariffs on steel and aluminium imports, arguing that they posed a threat to USA national security. -Canada relationship in nothing but positive terms.

Since 2001, free trade with China has cost millions of Americans their jobs. Trump and Navarro in ratcheting up tensions with Canada since the tariffs were announced at the end of May.
