Merkley Trump Kim summit a'colossal disappointment

Hours after President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un met for the first time, former National Basketball Association star Dennis Rodman seemed to cast himself as a man whose efforts to "bring peace between the two countries" was finally starting to pay off.

Trump responded to such commentary on Twitter, saying: "The fact that I am having a meeting is a major loss for the USA, say the haters & losers". Trump described his meeting with Kim as "better than anyone could have expected". You know, we did sanctions and all the things you would do but I think without the rhetoric, you know, other administrations, I don't want to get specific on that, but you know they had a policy of silence.

The US has long held the view that North Korea's illegitimate military activities can't be traded away for its right to do legitimate military activities.

Hours after Trump and Kim first met, the two leaders emerged from their talks to sign a joint document. He said it would "increase the pressure on Iran" to give up its nuclear infrastructure and capabilities. The VFW sent a June 6 letter to President Trump to urge him to make the issue part of the negotiation. The agreement required Iran to curb its uranium enrichment in exchange for relief from worldwide sanctions. "We haven't given up anything", he said.

Trump added in his remarks on Tuesday that the deal "cannot be renegotiated in any way". In the post-summit press conference Trump called Kim "very talented".

The U.S. State Department's 2017 human rights' report on North Korea details a long litany of abuses, including: "extrajudicial killings; disappearances; arbitrary arrests and detentions; torture; political prison camps in which conditions were often harsh, life threatening, and included forced and compulsory labor".

But Trump argued that the joint military exercises with South Korea were "very provocative" and cost "a tremendous amount of money", complaining that Seoul doesn't foot enough of the bill.

"The United States and North Korea have been in a state of antagonism for more than half a century", Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said. As Trump took a victory lap on the world stage, experts and allies struggled to account for what Trump and Kim had agreed to - and whether this agreement could actually be the first of its kind not to be broken by the North Koreans.

Footage from the event shows USA president and the North Korean leader preparing to take their seats on opposite sides of a dining room table at the Capella Hotel on the resort island of Sentosa.

Bill Richardson, the veteran North Korea negotiator and former governor of New Mexico, said during a phone briefing on Tuesday the summit achieved a personal connection between Trump and Kim. This side of the commander-in-chief came out during his meeting with North Korea's Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un when Trump showed an action movie-style trailer he had made for the occasion. America's friends, Japan and South Korea, didn't do so well. "I do not know with whom the North Korean leader is negotiating".
