Don’t Be Afraid to Talk With Someone

Suicide accounted for almost 45,000 deaths in 2016 and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that suicide rates have increased in almost every state over the past two decades with half of states seeing suicide rates go up more than 30 percent.

Most experts agree that a lack of good mental health care is at the core of the suicide problem.

The U.S. suicide rate has crept higher since the start of the 21st Century, becoming the second leading cause of death for those between ages 10 and 34, according to data from the federal Centers for Disease Control.

In a Huffington Post article titled "My Suicide Week: Reliving Hell in the 24-hour News Cycle", reporter Ashley Feinberg wrote about how the coverage affected her.

It found that more than half of all suicide victims in 2016 did not have any professionally treated mental-health problems at the time of their deaths. It is a myth that asking about suicide increases the risk of suicide.

Suicide rates in the United States have increased by more than 25% since 1999.

"Suicide is something we've learned is preventable, and there are several evidence-based strategies that can help".

John Daniszewski, vice president and editor at large for standards at The Associated Press, said: "Our responsibility is to keep people informed, but in a way that doesn't lead others to consider suicide".

Research from the CDC shows there's a disproportionate rate of men committing suicide compared with women; with 32.8 per every 100,000 men 65 and older versus 5.2 per every 100,000 women 65 and over. She told us there's always a need for more facility space.

As cliche as it sounds, suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. Ridgway notes that "if we are really going to address the issue of suicide in Tennessee, we need additional funding in our state devoted specifically to suicide prevention efforts". Sometimes that's because those people were never diagnosed, but there are other factors besides mental health that can awaken suicidal tendencies. While the link between mental health and suicide isn't absolute, it's strong and troubling. Long gone are the days when mental health issues are ignored; professional help is out there, and being depressed, for example, is something for which treatment may be needed.

Tell the person that you care, and let them do most of the talking about how they're feeling.

Suicide, first, with no introspection and patience, to me, would be like telling the Lord he's a liar and not trusting what He says. And above all, don't be afraid to ask if they've thought about suicide.

"Someone will be there to talk to you, there are people at counseling centers all over town that want to help".
