Elon Musk’s Boring Company will build high-speed transit tunnels in Chicago

The Boring Company headed by Elon Musk wants to get you from downtown Chicago to the airport in 12 minutes

Call it a big win for Elon Musk.

Chicago has picked Elon Musk's Boring Company to build a futuristic transportation link to the city's airport.

The $250 million station beneath Block 37 was first envisioned as the hub of an express train system linking downtown to both O'Hare and Midway airports, but was abandoned in 2011 while only half-finished, after running well over budget.

The company has designed a system that uses computer-controlled electric-powered wheeled "skates" that can travel at speeds of up to 150 miles per hour while carrying passengers, goods or vehicles riding on top of them.

The deal comes about a month after Musk unveiled a plan to burrow a high-speed network of "personalized mass transit" tunnels under Los Angeles that he said could be built without disturbance or noise at the surface.

"We're really excited to work with the mayor and the city to bring this new high-speed public transportation system to Chicago", a Boring Company spokesman said as the company announced the news on Thursday.

For the Loop, passengers are expected to ride in autonomous 16-passenger vehicles, or "skates", based loosely on Tesla's Model X SUV.The battery-powered vehicles will move along tracks with wheels on a concrete shelf much like a auto, while four stabilizing wheels on the sides would ride along curbs in the tunnel walls.

"This system is created to be more like a highway and a bunch of offramps and loops connecting to the highway, kind of like cars", Musk said at an event. The Boring Company released Wednesday renderings of what the underground system and rail cars would look like.

FOX Business' Thomas Barrabi contributed to this article. No taxpayer dollars will be funding the service, the mayor said.

Officials from city and Boring have stated that it's too soon to estimate a timeframe or final cost for this project, but have stated that Boring will be fronting the bill. Musk's company also would keep all revenue from ticket sales and advertising. The CTA estimates getting from the Loop to O'Hare on the Blue Line takes 40 to 45 minutes. Each skate features a climate controlled cabin, luggage storage space, and Wi-Fi.

"We're taking a bet on a guy who doesn't like to fail - and his resources, " he told the Chicago Tribune. Opponents say the exemption Boring seeks from a lengthy environmental review of the Los Angeles test tunnel violates state law forbidding such waivers for large-scope projects on a piecemeal basis.
