Merkel on tightrope over disputed migrant policy

Angela Merkel Trump

Albania's Prime Minister Edi Rama said in a press conference in Vienna at the end of May that his country counted 2,311 arrivals that month, up from 162 in January.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel was fighting Tuesday to stamp out the first major row within her uneasy coalition, as disputes over her refugee policy returned to haunt her while she negotiates a broad European Union asylum deal.

The German leader also reiterated that said she is not ready to "give up on G7" but at the same time would seek dialogue with Russian Federation and try to "work very closely" with Japan, Canada, India and China.

Merkel said that Trump would probably retaliate by implementing new tariffs on German vehicles.

A photo of German Chancellor Angela Merkel and other world leaders standing over a cross-armed United States President Donald Trump at Friday's G7 summit has been given the meme treatment on social media.

Mr Kurz also said fighting illegal immigration would be a priority for Vienna's presidency of the Council of the European Union in the second half of 2018.

We will act too, says the German Chancellor.

Merkel said she expected Italy's new coalition government to vote for the extension of European sanctions against Russian Federation.

Other G-7 countries lobbied unsuccessfully at the summit for the U.S. to reverse its tariffs on imported steel and aluminium imports.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel looks towards US President Donald Trump, who arrived late for the Gender Equality Advisory Council working breakfast on the second day of the G7 Summit on June 9, 2018 in Quebec City, Canada.

Mr Trump had already threatened to divide the G7, made up of the US, France, UK, Italy, Germany, Japan and Canada, when he suggested Russian Federation should be allowed to rejoin the group.

The group managed a common statement in which they agreed to disagree on some issues, only to have Trump disavow the document in a tweet after leaving the meeting.

Trump advisers Larry Kudlow and Peter Navarro nonetheless toed the presidential line, savaging Trudeau in Sunday show appearances over what Kudlow acknowledged were "things that the prime minister has said before, basically".

Yet after leaving the summit, Trump tweeted that he would instruct US officials not to endorse the G-7 statement, after objecting to comments from summit host Trudeau. Speaking on the condition of anonymity a Canadian official told national broadcaster CBC that not only had Trudeau made these remarks prior to the meeting, on USA television last week, he had also informed Trump of his position before he went on air. And I said 'What's this all about? "We stand by it and whoever leaves it and turns their back on it is showing inconsistency and lack of character".
