Nadal unsure of Wimbledon appearance after French Open win

Over the best-of-five sets on clay, Nadal improved to 111-2 - it is a figure nearly as imposing as the nearby Eiffel Tower - his lone reverses coming against Robin Soderling in 2009 and Novak Djokovic in 2015 at the French Open.

Rafael Nadal says he is hungry for more grand slam titles but has no "obsession" over matching or surpassing Roger Federer's tally off 20 after winning the French Open for an 11th time. I had a long and mentally tough clay court season, of course, because I played nearly all the matches possible after coming from an injury. "I am sure you'll win here in the next couple of years". But I guess the way he's been playing the last three sets yesterday (Thursday, vs Schwartzman) and the last two sets today (Friday, vs del Potro) is going to help give him confidence.

Thiem, who was trying to become only the second Austrian Grand Slam champion after Tomas Muster's 1995 Paris triumph, played his part in the two hour 42 minute tussle, but was unable to sustain the high-octane tennis needed to ruffle Nadal.

Dominic Thiem of Austria was no match for the veteran, and the cramp was simply the latest in a significant string of fitness issues which have plagued Nadal over the course of the competition.

But he could not match Nadal's point-by-point consistency and intensity on Sunday.

There was still fight in Thiem, though, and he had a break point when Nadal served at 4-2 - a game in which the Spaniard was warned for taking too long to serve.

Thiem began to play better as the set went on, and it was only one break, but he could never earn it back, and Nadal won the second set 6-3. Thiem and Nadal have battled back and forth throughout the 2018 ATP World Tour.

Ahead of his return to tennis action, Roger Federer revealed he would like to "have a battle" with Rafael Nadal once again at the French Open.

Up a break at 2-1 in the third set, Nadal stopped serving after a fault because he couldn't straighten his left middle finger.

Ken Rosewall, who won the title in 1953 and 1968, presented Nadal with the trophy.

The 24-year-old Austrian, playing his first Grand Slam final, made 18 unforced errors in losing the first set, and hit 11 clean winners.

Thiem didn't think that loose game to end the first set was as crucial as it might seemed to everyone else.

While unpopular, Nadal's comments have resulted in more of a rekindling of an old debate rather than sparking a new one. He won the first six points and broke for 2-0. Puerta was to later fail a drugs test and handed an eight-year ban, eventually reduced to two years.

Yet Nadal also knows he could be a threat after playing impressively previous year before falling in the last 16, losing a classic tussle against Luxembourg's Gilles Muller. The Spaniard's 11th Monte Carlo title and his eighth Rome title were his 31st and 32nd Masters titles, respectively, breaking a tie with Djokovic, who has won 30.
