Rebel Wilson's $3.5M defamation payout dramatically slashed

Rebel Wilson sued Bauer Media over articles which claimed she invented her backstory to “make it in Hollywood”

Speaking on behalf of Bauer Media, general counsel, Adrian Goss, said: "It was important for us to revisit the award of damages".

But Bauer Media appealed and the Woman's Day publisher had a major win on Thursday.

The Victorian supreme court ruled on Thursday morning that the Australian actor had not proved that she lost work and suffered economic damages in Hollywood as a result of the defamatory articles which painted her as a serial liar.

A year ago, a jury found that Bauer Media, which publishes magazines like Australian Women's Weekly and Woman's Day, had defamed Wilson when it published a series of articles claiming she'd lied about her name, age, and other details about her life.

Wilson's lawyers had argued she missed out on film roles between mid-2015 and the end of 2016 due to the "grapevine effect" the articles had within the film industry.

A number of media companies - including Nine Entertainment, the publisher of this website - attempted to join Bauer Media in its appeal against the award to Wilson.

With defamation payouts capped in Australia at $350,000, University of Melbourne Law Professor Andrew Kenyon told 9news.com.au when news broke of the damages ruling this payout is "way higher" than Australia has ever seen.

It also reduced Wilson's non-economic losses by 50,000 Australian dollars to 600,000 Australian dollars.

Wilson said in April that she and her legal team were "very confident" the original defamation payout would be upheld.

The Court of Appeal is yet to determine costs.

At the time, Wilson tweeted she would be donating the money to Australian charities and supporting the Australian film industry with the money.

Wilson was not present for the judgment but she took to Twitter the night before, saying she had already won the case.

Wilson is overseas at the moment, so she has yet to comment on today's decision.
